Description

Overview

The Ferrata della Val Gelada is a challenging route that climbs through the namesake valley, a severe and steep environment dominated by the Corno di Flavona in the heart of the Northern Dolomites of Brenta. The itinerary demands solid physical fitness to manage the considerable total elevation gain. The sections equipped with cables and ladders are generally straightforward and do not present particularly high technical difficulties in the strict sense. However, the constant exposure, isolation, and distinctly alpine character of the Val Gelada make it suitable only for experienced hikers with a good ability to assess terrain and conditions.

Approach

The recommended starting point is Lago di Tovel. To reach it, from Tuenno follow the municipal road signposted for the lake for about 11 km; after passing a first parking area, continue on a gravel road for another 2 km to the Chalet. From the lake, take trail CAI 314 towards Malga Tuenna, ascending a comfortable dirt road. Ignore the first junction to the right and continue following the signs for Malga Tuenna and, later, for Passo della Val Gelada (marker CAI 380). The trail tackles a first equipped section and, after exiting the forest, reaches an intersection with CAI 306 (Sentiero Attrezzato delle Palete). Continue straight towards the west, reaching Passo della Val Gelada at 2171 meters in about 2 hours from the parking lot. This initial approach section, though on a clear trail, begins to define the character of the route: a path that gains elevation continuously, quickly leaving the forest behind to enter a rocky, open environment.

Via Ferrata

From Passo della Val Gelada, trail CAI 380 plunges decisively into the Val Gelada, aiming for Passo di Val Gelada at 2686 meters. This section is physically demanding and overcomes nearly 500 meters of elevation gain. The route enters the inner part of the valley, a vast and severe glacial amphitheater. Here, a rocky bastion is overcome via a gully equipped with cables-a passage that, while not presenting particular technical difficulties, requires caution due to the often debris-covered ground. The setting is majestic, surrounded by the imposing walls of Cima Paradiso, Cima Sassara, and Sasso Alto to the right, while to the left looms the Gran de Formenton. The progression is continuous and sustained, with a steady climbing rhythm. A final equipped section leads to Passo di Val Gelada, reached in about 2 hours from the previous pass (4 hours total from the parking lot).

At the pass, a crossroads with the Sentiero Alpinistico Costanzi (CAI 336), keep left towards Bocchetta dei Tre Sassi (2613 m). This segment has a more varied character: sections of trail on scree alternate with some vertical passages equipped with cables and ladders, which directly engage the upper body muscles. These are followed by less demanding trail sections, often exposed on ledges, offering views of the surrounding valleys. Bocchetta dei Tre Sassi is reached in about 45 minutes from Passo di Val Gelada, for a total of about 4 hours and 45 minutes from the start. The route thus alternates moments of climbing with walking sections, maintaining a discontinuous rhythm but always in an exposed environment.

Descent

From Bocchetta dei Tre Sassi, descend along trail CAI 334, which initially proceeds on a false flat towards the south before beginning the steep descent into the Val delle Giare. The path descends a debris-filled valley, a wide, rocky channel that demands a controlled pace. You encounter a couple of short equipped sections and a small ladder to descend, ignoring the junction with CAI 306 (Sentiero Attrezzato delle Palete). Continue descending until you intercept CAI 314, which you take to the left towards Rio Tresenga. A comfortable trail finally leads back to Lago di Tovel and the parking lot in about 2 hours and 30 minutes from the bocchetta, for a total hiking time of approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes. The descent, while technically simple, is physically draining due to its length and the nature of the terrain, requiring concentration until the end.

Useful Notes

The Val Gelada and Val delle Giare can have snowy sections even late in the season; it is therefore advisable to carry crampons and an ice axe to manage any critical situations on residual snow or ice. The hike is long and has considerable elevation gain, so the use of telescopic trekking poles is highly recommended to reduce impact on the joints, especially during the descent. This route crosses a wild and little-frequented area, whose alpine character should not be underestimated despite the few equipped sections. In addition to these, you encounter a couple of short unprotected first-grade climbing moves, where a basic familiarity with rock is required. The via ferrata can be incorporated into longer routes, such as combining it with the Sentiero Attrezzato delle Palete or the Sentiero Alpinistico Costanzi, itineraries reserved for very experienced hikers. For maps, a detailed map of the Brenta Group is recommended. The route is predominantly scenic and endurance-based, rather than technical, but its length and isolation define its true difficulty.
