Ferrata di Rosazza

Overview

The Rosazza Via Ferrata unfolds within the narrow, deep gorge carved by the Cervo stream, between the town's cemetery and a road bridge just downstream. The setting is spectacular: walls of compact granite, polished by millennia of water action, flank a watercourse that forms crystal-clear pools, ideal for a refreshing break in warm weather. Though just a stone's throw from the village, the area retains a decidedly wild character. The route is predominantly horizontal, weaving along ledges and short vertical sections of ascent and descent, and is divided into two distinct parts. The first section is very easy: it plays out as a gentle traverse, culminating in a short Tibetan bridge, and ends on a small gravel beach where a convenient escape route is available. The second section is more technical: it features a few slightly overhanging passages that require greater confidence with progression on steel cable. Thanks to its modest elevation, around 900 meters, the itinerary is accessible in all seasons, offering a fast-paced but not exhausting introduction to the discipline.

Approach

The starting point is the road bridge over the Cervo stream that you encounter before entering Rosazza, coming from Campiglia Cervo. From Biella, ascend the entire Valle Cervo; after crossing the bridge that connects Campiglia and Rosazza, you can park near the Rosazza cemetery. From the parking area, descend on foot for about 5 minutes back to the road bridge downstream. Here, immediately downstream of the bridge on the right orographic bank, a metal ladder allows you to descend to the stream bed. At the start of the equipped path, there is a descriptive sign; at the actual beginning of the via ferrata, there is also a QR code with specific information about the first section.

Via Ferrata

The progression begins with abundant rock steps that make gripping easy and keep movement fluid. A first horizontal traverse, safe and well-equipped, passes under the span of the road bridge and leads directly to the short Tibetan bridge. The pace in this phase is steady and not very exposed, perfect for getting comfortable with the gorge environment. After crossing the bridge, a short descent brings you to the stream bank, where the easy section ends and a first escape route to the road is available.

The second section starts right from the bank and is marked by another QR code and some footholds carved from boulders bolted to the rock. The character of the route changes radically, becoming immediately more demanding and technical. You gain altitude by climbing the side of the gorge, tackling the first carabiner changes in slight overhangs. The terrain becomes rougher and more isolated, with the via ferrata developing across slabs and small ledges. About halfway through this section, the route climbs up to brush the back of some garages adjacent to the road, offering a second and convenient exit point. From here, you descend along the hillside, engaging in a sequence of technical traverses, descents, and ascents in slight overhangs, requiring good coordination. The pace becomes more broken and dynamic. When, after a final ascent, you spot the bridge of the monumental cemetery of Rosazza, you have reached the end. A beautiful pool downstream of the bridge invites a well-deserved refreshing break. The time for the via ferrata alone is about 25 minutes from the start (30 minutes from the parking area).

Descent

The return is very quick and immediate. The parking area is less than a hundred meters from the end of the route and is reached with a one-minute walk. The total time for the excursion, including approach, via ferrata, and descent, is about 50 minutes.

Useful Notes

The Rosazza Via Ferrata is a very short itinerary, characterized by multiple escape routes that allow you to interrupt the excursion at various points with ease. The first section, horizontal and not very exposed, is also suitable for absolute beginners, serving as an excellent introduction. The second, more technical and vertical, instead represents a valid training ground for those who want to approach slightly more complex and airy passages for the first time, without ever presenting excessive or prolonged difficulties. The environmental challenges are generally modest, but it is essential to assess the flow of the Cervo stream: after heavy rain, wet rocks can become very slippery, altering the perception of difficulty. In the Valle Cervo area and near Oropa (reachable in about 30 minutes by car), there are five other via ferratas of moderate difficulty, creating interesting opportunities to combine multiple routes in a single day.
