Description
Overview
The Ferrata al Sass Rigais is a classic high-altitude route that combines two distinct equipped paths: the Ferrata Est and the Ferrata Sud. Both fall into the medium difficulty range, though the eastern variant features some more pronounced vertical sections, making it advisable to tackle it on the ascent for a safer and smoother progression. The hike is characterized by a physically demanding approach and return, culminating on the highest summit of Val Gardena and the entire Odle group, offering a complete alpine experience.
The environment is typically Dolomitic, unfolding across slabs, ledges, and sharp ridges. The pace is discontinuous, alternating long approach stretches on trail with technical rock sections, with marked exposure especially in the upper part. The character of the route is physically demanding due to its length and elevation gain, technical at key points, and strikingly panoramic thanks to its dominant position.
Approach
The route begins at the top station of the cable car that rises from Selva di Val Gardena to the Rifugio Col Raiser (2106 m). From here, following the sign and trail marker 4, head northeast along a gravel road with some ups and downs until you reach the Rifugio Firenze (2040 m), which can be reached in a short time. From the refuge, take trail 13, which points decisively toward the massive silhouette of Sass Rigais. The climb continues steadily to a crucial junction at Plan Ciautier (2322 m), reached about an hour from the top station.
At this key junction, you face a choice: veer right to ascend the long and unstable Val Salieres gully (following faint traces) and tackle the Ferrata Est on the way up, or keep left, following trail marker 29 toward Forcella de Mesdì, to climb via the Ferrata Sud. This description follows the route that ascends via the Ferrata Est and descends via the Ferrata Sud, generally considered the most logical and safest option.
Opting for the right fork, you climb the debris-filled gully that separates Sass Rigais from Furchetta. This section, on loose terrain, requires caution. Reaching the saddle between the two mountains (2696 m, about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Plan Ciautier, 2 hours and 15 minutes total), a sudden and wide view opens onto Val di Funes. Keeping left, you then ascend along a clear trace up the east slab of Sass Rigais, aided by some red paint marks, until you reach the saddle where the metal equipment of the ferrata begins (2800 m, 2 hours and 30 minutes total).
The approach unfolds in a severe and grandiose environment, dominated by vertical walls and debris cones. The pace is that of a long, continuous climb, with a crescendo of exposure as you near the base of the wall. The character is predominantly physical and approach-oriented, with the terrain evolving from beaten trail to trace on scree and finally to rock.
Via Ferrata
The equipped route begins with the ascent of some well-stepped rock sections offering excellent holds, where the cable primarily serves as self-belay. You gain elevation steadily, overcome a crack with a step, and tackle an oblique ramp to the left. You then arrive at a characteristic vertical point: after a short traverse left on pitons, you climb vertically using a series of wide, solid stirrups.
The route continues along a long succession of rock sections without significant technical difficulty, before veering right into a well-defined rocky gully. Exiting the gully, the summit cross stands directly ahead. You are now in the final section of the Ferrata Est: you tackle a series of rocky steps alternating with easy rock sections, until you reach the thin summit ridge that leads to the cross of Sass Rigais (3025 m, 1 hour from the start, 3 hours and 30 minutes total).
The Ferrata Est develops mainly across compact rock slabs and ribs, with a predominantly vertical and direct line. The pace is technical and continuous, with exposed passages but always on solid, well-equipped rock. The character is that of a classic fixed-rope climb, challenging for its exposure and altitude, but not extremely physical thanks to good footholds.
After a well-deserved break on the summit, with its breathtaking 360-degree panorama, the descent begins along the Ferrata Sud. Head south along a summit ridge, partly unprotected, overcoming some rock sections. You then proceed along a long succession of rock sections, sloping ramps, and rocky steps of medium-low difficulty, losing elevation quickly and steadily until you join a steep descending trail. You reach another rocky step, where you alternate between a ramp descent and a more vertical step near a wooden walkway. Once past this, you can consider the equipment of the Ferrata Sud and thus the entire Ferrata al Sass Rigais complete (1 hour from the summit, 4 hours and 30 minutes total).
The Ferrata Sud has a more varied and traversing character, developing across ledges and gullies. The descent pace is rapid and at times discontinuous, alternating cable sections with short trail stretches. Exposure remains significant, but technical difficulty is generally lower than on the ascent route.
Descent
The descent to the valley continues along a gravelly gully toward Plan Ciautier, the junction encountered during the approach. You can opt for a marked shortcut toward Col Raiser, veering right at a fork. The return takes about an hour of walking, for a total time of around 6 hours for the entire hike.
This final stretch unfolds on debris terrain and trail, with a monotonous but fast pace. The character is purely a return, physically demanding due to accumulated fatigue, but without technical difficulty.
Useful Notes
This ferrata of medium difficulty allows you to conquer a 3000-meter peak in the majestic Odle Puez group. The combination of one ferrata on the ascent and another on the descent on two different sides makes it a particularly enjoyable and complete hike, appreciated even by experienced ferratisti. It is essential to carefully assess the length and overall commitment of the route, the high altitude, and the absence of alternative escape routes once committed to the ferratas: for these reasons, it is absolutely to be avoided in unstable weather or when thunderstorms threaten. The described itinerary is the recommended one, but nothing prevents you from doing it in reverse or descending via the same ascent route. For cartography, detailed hiking maps of the area are recommended.
