Ferrata Ombretta

Overview

The Ferrata Ombretta is a short but highly rewarding protected route, set within an alpine itinerary that climbs through the wild Val de Contrin to culminate on Cima Ombretta. The excursion involves considerable elevation gain and demands excellent physical fitness, but it rewards you with exceptional views dominated by the imposing south face of the Marmolada.

Approach

Access begins from the Ciampac cable car parking lot (1500 m) in the Val di Fassa. Take trail CAI 602, which enters the forest, crosses a stream, and climbs with steep switchbacks to reach Baita Locia Contrin (1736 m) in about half an hour. The route then unfolds through the broad and wild Val de Contrin, following the valley floor near the stream along trail 602, ignoring the branches for Colac and Passo San Nicolò, until you reach Rifugio Contrin (2016 m), with a total time of about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

From the rifugio, follow the CAI 607 signs heading south-southeast, ignoring the 606 and 610 deviations. Continue to a junction, keeping left on trail 607, which climbs toward the Ferrata Ombretta and Sasso Vernale, entering the debris-strewn Val di Cirelle. During the ascent, it is crucial to spot an unmarked junction: going straight (south-southeast) leads to Passo delle Cirelle, while keeping left climbs a steep, debris-filled gully heading toward Passo Ombrettola. Continue to another junction (about 1h 15' from the rifugio, 2h 45' total): trail 607 continues straight toward the pass, while you take the CAI 650 to the left. This trail traverses the slope toward the rocky bastion that hosts the ferrata. Just below the start, marked by a painted inscription on the rock, a cave (2570 m) offers a sheltered spot to gear up (15' from the junction, 3h total). The approach is characterized by a steady climbing rhythm, with a route that alternates between wooded sections and open, debris-covered terrain, gradually preparing you for the rocky, exposed environment of the ferrata.

Via Ferrata

From the cave, follow the markers to approach the start. The Ferrata Ombretta follows a logical, well-laid-out line, climbing a moderately steep section of the slope. It begins on a slab with excellent holds, then transitions onto an easy ledge that leads into a long diagonal gully. This groove, narrow in places, allows you to gain elevation smoothly and continuously. The climb ends on a series of rocky steps with loose debris, potentially unstable, that lead to the end of the protected section (2620 m). The entire ferrata takes about 20 minutes, for a total of 3 hours and 20 minutes from the start. From here, you enjoy a fine view of the Val Contrin. The route is technically accessible, with a predominantly vertical but not extreme character, favoring continuous climbing on solid rock, interspersed with short walking sections on ledges. The ferrata unfolds on a compact slope, offering progressive exposure and a sustained but not frantic pace.

Descent

The return follows a magnificent loop route. From the end of the ferrata, continue east on the CAI 650, moving over gravel and debris toward a saddle, with the imposing north face of Sasso Vernale on your right. After climbing a well-marked moraine basin, you reach a saddle at 2950 m (45' from the ferrata). From here, a short detour to the right is highly recommended to the Ombretta Orientale summit (3011 m, 15' round trip), which offers a breathtaking view of the south face of the Marmolada and the surrounding Dolomite groups.

Back at the saddle, continue left on trail 650 to another saddle, from which you descend right on a steep path near a World War I structure, heading toward Passo Ombretta and Bivacco Dal Bianco (2730 m, 1h 30' from the ferrata, 5h total). Once at Passo Ombretta (2702 m), to complete the loop, keep left following the CAI 610 in a steady descent to Rifugio Contrin (1h from the pass, 6h total), and from there, retrace your steps back to the parking lot (1h 30' from the rifugio, 7h 30' total). An alternative, perhaps for an overnight stay, is to keep right from Passo Ombretta to reach Rifugio Falier (2074 m), located at the base of the spectacular Marmolada cirque. The descent is panoramic and varied, with an initial climb toward the ridges, followed by a long, continuous descent on airy trails that allow you to take in the entire route you have completed.

Useful Notes

The Ferrata Ombretta (sometimes referred to as Ferrata Vernale) is technically short and not difficult, suitable even as a first approach to this type of route. However, it takes place in a high alpine environment and allows you to reach altitudes close to 3000 meters: the itinerary as a whole is long, with considerable elevation gain, and is therefore demanding and strenuous. The severe environment and the view from the Ombretta ridge, especially of the Marmolada, are well worth the effort. The ferrata's equipment has been recently renovated and is in excellent condition. The experience is characterized by a strong contrast between the relative simplicity of the via ferrata itself and the overall commitment of the excursion, which requires endurance and good acclimatization to altitude.
