Ferrata al Pan di Zucchero

Overview

This report describes the ascent of Pan di Zucchero via the via ferrata of the same name. It is an extraordinary route that starts from sea level, with the approach made by rubber boat. The most distinctive feature is the finish: the descent is made via a 45-meter abseil that ends directly on the boat waiting below the cliff.

Approach

The starting point is Masua Beach, in the province of Carbonia Iglesias, along the western coast of Sardinia. You reach it by car, following a road that skirts an abandoned mine, until you reach a parking lot from which you can see the full majesty of Pan di Zucchero, the small island that is the day's objective. From the beach, you board a rubber boat (paid service, roughly 10-20 €, with the possibility of renting the specific gear for the abseil descent) that takes you directly to the base of the cliff, where the via ferrata begins.

Via Ferrata

The start of the Ferrata Pan di Zucchero is immediate. The first meters feature well-shaped steps and easy progression, with a small sign indicating the "Miners' Path" and a few metal rungs for support. The trail then shifts left onto a fine ledge that offers a view of a nearby natural arch. The route initially develops along a well-marked horizontal band, typical of coastal limestone formations, offering comfortable and protected walking. You reach a flat area, excellent for a first panoramic rest stop, before resuming the climb up easy rocky steps, all perfectly protected by a system of anchors in excellent condition.

The climb continues inside a reddish rock cleft, then emerges into an exposed position and continues ascending the enormous sea stack. The progression alternates between sections of equipped trail and short vertical stretches, with numerous holds that make the climbing easy. The route maintains a steady but not strenuous pace, with well-spaced vertical sequences that let you soak in the surroundings. You encounter a nice dihedral, to be tackled with easy climbing but with exposure that becomes more pronounced. Shortly after, you reach the summit register.

From here, you continue along a trail until you reach the summit plateau, characterized by the typical Mediterranean scrub covering the rock. The summit offers a stunning 360-degree panorama over the sea, crowning an experience where the scenic aspect prevails over the technical one.

Descent

Two options are possible for the return. The first is to retrace the entire via ferrata in reverse. The second, and more spectacular, is the one recommended by the boat operators: perform a 45-meter abseil that ends directly on the boat. This descent into the void adds an unforgettable element of adventure to the excursion, concluding in spectacular fashion a route already rich in atmosphere.

The Ferrata del Pan di Zucchero is a unique experience of its kind. The start directly from the water and the abseil descent onto the rubber boat make it memorable. While the technical difficulties are modest, the scenic value is absolutely magnificent and undoubtedly worth a visit.
