Ferrata Angelino al Monte Generoso

Overview

The Angelino Via Ferrata is an introductory route located in Swiss territory, just a thirty-minute drive from the Chiasso border crossing. The outing combines a two-hour hiking approach with an equipped section that gains the summit ridge of Monte Generoso. Although rated as easy, the route includes three key passages that, in terms of commitment and exposure, sit at a medium difficulty level, providing a formative experience without excessive technical demands.

Approach

The starting point is near Mendrisio. After crossing the border at Chiasso, you reach the Trattoria Peonia, which has a large pay parking lot on the left side of the road (it's advisable to have coins on hand). From here, take a gravel road that enters the woods, heading toward the Bellavista train stop at 1223 meters. The trail initially runs alongside the railway, then continues in a long, steady traverse at mid-slope to the train's terminal station at 1600 meters. Following the signs for the summit of Monte Generoso and, just before reaching it, those for Lanzo d'Intelvi, you walk along the north side of the mountain on a horizontal trail that leads to the start of the equipped section. The approach takes roughly two hours from the parking lot and is characterized by a steady pace and gradual elevation gain, with no technical sections.

Via Ferrata

The equipped route begins with a short ledge to the right, which leads to a first slightly overhanging ladder. This initial ledge section offers a first taste of the environment, supported on compact limestone slabs. After the ladder, you arrive at a small terrace from which you descend a few meters with the help of a chain. This gives access to a second ladder, longer and more vertical. At its end, a third ladder is visible, but to reach it you must tackle an exposed horizontal traverse, to be crossed by smearing on smooth rock. This passage, though brief, requires attention and represents the most exposed point of the route.

After climbing the third ladder, the character of the route changes dramatically: the path becomes more relaxed with an easy ridge section, where the steel cable often serves as a simple handrail. This is a pleasant airy walk over rock and earth, offering panoramic views. You then reach a well-equipped dihedral, to be climbed using a combination of artificial steps and natural holds. After some rocky terrain, you continue on a stepped trail to a short vertical wall, which can be climbed. Immediately after, you cross a characteristic suspended wooden footbridge, a scenic element that spans a notch in the ridge. At this point, you are near the cross of the fore-summit at 1694 meters, which you pass. The final ascent to the true summit (1704 m) involves a short descent of a few meters followed by an equipped trail. The time to complete the Angelino Via Ferrata is about 30 minutes from the start, for a total of 2 hours and 30 minutes from the departure point. The pace is discontinuous, with short technical phases interspersed with rest sections, in a sequence of vertical climbing and walking.

Descent

The return route involves descending from Monte Generoso along the obvious trail toward the train station, then retracing the approach trail in reverse. The descent from the summit takes about an hour, bringing the total time for the outing to around 3 hours and 30 minutes. It is a clear, straightforward hiking trail that allows you to relax after the effort of the via ferrata.

Useful Notes

The Angelino Via Ferrata is an ideal choice for a first approach to this type of activity. While overall easy, the more significant passages-such as the initial overhanging ladder, the exposed traverse on smooth rock, and the final dihedral-provide an excellent baptism for novice via ferrata climbers, though it is still advisable to tackle it in the company of more experienced people. Its location near the border makes it easily accessible and combinable with other experiences in the area. The route offers a great overview of via ferrata technique, alternating climbing moments with airy walking sections, all in a pleasant and accessible natural setting.
