Sentiero Attrezzato del Fiume

Overview

The Sentiero Attrezzato del Fiume is an ideal route for a first taste of via ferrata, unfolding along the course of the Era stream in the Lecco Prealps. Its modest elevation, around 600 meters, makes it accessible nearly year-round, offering a gradual technical experience in a sheltered setting. The route's morphology, winding among ledges and slabs shaped by water, ensures an adventurous outing that never feels overly exposed.

Approach

Access begins from the hamlet of Sonvico, in the municipality of Mandello del Lario (LC). From the Lecco-Valtellina state road, exit at Abbadia Lariana to reach Mandello, then follow signs for Somana and continue climbing toward the contrada of Sonvico. At the final fork, keep right until you find parking spaces. From the parking area, trail 15B enters the woods with a moderate grade. After passing a small fountain, bear left at the first junction; the path continues nearly flat to a second signed intersection, where you turn left again. A short descent leads to the bed of the Era stream, the actual starting point of the equipped route. The approach takes about 30 minutes of walking.

Via Ferrata

The route, well marked with red or white-and-red paint, begins with an easy stream crossing, followed immediately by the first support cable. The path initially develops on the left bank (orographic left), alternating at a lively pace between polished slab sections, short ups and downs, and exposed passages protected by lateral cables. The setting is dominated by the gorge carved by the stream, with conglomerate walls hemming in the gully. The constant sound of water accompanies your progress. After another crossing, you move to the right bank (orographic right) to continue the ascent. You then tackle a few modest rock steps, crossing the watercourse several times. In some sections, you proceed directly along the stream bed, where you must stay alert to avoid losing the markings. Regaining the left bank, you overcome some easy rock ledges up to an equipped traverse with stirrups, passing by striking rapids and waterfalls. The pace becomes more technical but remains steady. You then reach the most challenging vertical section: a short wall about six meters high, with excellent holds and well-shaped edges, requiring a sequence of decisive moves. Past this, you climb further rock ledges, traverse to the right, and follow a final steep trail that ends in front of a signpost, marking the conclusion of the Sentiero Attrezzato del Fiume. The via ferrata takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, for a total of 2 hours and 15 minutes from the start of the hike.

Descent

For a direct return to Sonvico, from the end of the ferrata turn left at the junction and follow trail 15 downhill, which leads back to the parking area in about 1 hour and 15 minutes (total hike: 3 hours and 30 minutes). There are interesting alternatives to extend your outing. One option is to climb trail 15 toward Alpe di Era, reachable in 15 minutes, then descend to Sonvico (about 1 hour and 30 minutes from the Alpe; total 4 hours). A more challenging option involves significantly lengthening the itinerary toward Zucco di Sileggio: during the descent on trail 15, you encounter a right-hand turn for trail 17B, which climbs a ridge and leads to the Sentiero Attrezzato dello Zucco di Sileggio, a route of medium difficulty. The full loop takes about 8 hours.

Useful Notes

The itinerary is very pleasant and of moderate difficulty, suitable for beginners and families with children. Exposure is limited, and the few challenging passages are well protected. The route is predominantly horizontal and scenic, with moderate physical demands. For enthusiasts looking to combine multiple ferratas, this route can be paired with the nearby Sentiero Attrezzato allo Zucco di Sileggio, which presents greater difficulty, creating a loop roughly 20 km long with significant elevation gain, requiring excellent physical fitness. In the same area, you'll also find the Ferrata della Galleria di Morcate, the more demanding Ferrata al Corno del Medale, and the Ferrata Gamma 1. These last two, longer and harder, could be tackled in the morning, reserving the more relaxed Sentiero Attrezzato del Fiume for the afternoon. Also starting from the Mandello del Lario area is the Sentiero Attrezzato della Val Cassina, which can be linked to the ascent of Grigna Settentrionale via the Ferrata al Sasso dei Carbonari.
