Sentiero Attrezzato della Val Cassina

Overview

The Sentiero Attrezzato della Val Cassina climbs a rugged gully wedged between the sheer limestone walls of Sasso dei Carbonari and Sasso Cavallo, on the southern flank of Grigna Settentrionale. The route unfolds in a stark, confined environment shaped like a deep furrow, where hikers advance between towering rock faces. While it demands no particular technical skill, this itinerary is very long and physically punishing, with a total elevation gain of nearly 1400 meters, making it primarily a test of endurance.

Approach

The route starts from the hamlet of Rongio, in the municipality of Mandello del Lario. From here, a narrow uphill road leads to a spacious parking area at about 400 meters elevation. The approach continues along a paved lane that quickly turns into a forest trail, climbing at a moderate gradient up the Valle del Meria. After about thirty minutes, you reach the Ponte di Ferro (490 m), a key junction where you pick up trail 14. The ascent becomes steeper here, winding up the slope. Roughly two hours from the start, a fork offers a choice: continue on trail 14 toward Rifugio Elisa (1515 m) or take the steeper trail 16, marked with red waymarks, which heads directly to the entrance of Val Cassina. Opting for this latter variant, after about three hours from the parking area you arrive at the start of the first fixed gear, concluding an approach that is already significant in terms of effort and elevation gain.

Via Ferrata

Val Cassina presents itself as a narrow, deep rock cleft, bounded by the vertical walls of Sasso dei Carbonari and Sasso Cavallo. The equipped trail ascends the main gully, overcoming a series of rocky steps and ledges via cables, stirrups, and metal ladders. The limestone rock is generally compact, and the passages, though continuous, do not pose high technical difficulties, maintaining a character of vertical but secure progression. About halfway up, a significant deviation to the right provides access to the Ferrata del CAI Mandello al Sasso dei Carbonari (trail marker 26). This variant, spectacular but much longer, allows you to gain the summit of Grigna Settentrionale via the ridge. The main route, however, continues along the gully, ending after about 45 minutes of equipped progression at the Bocchetta della Val Cassina (1823 m). Here, the view suddenly opens up, offering a stark contrast between the closed, severe environment of the valley and the vast pastures of the western slope, with Grigna Meridionale dominating the background.

Descent

From the Bocchetta della Val Cassina, descend with a broad traverse across the slope toward Rifugio Bietti Buzzi (1719 m). Just before the refuge, on the left, take trail 25, which shortly after intercepts trail 18 of the Gardata, also on the left. This path, to be followed in constant descent while ignoring the right-hand deviation for trail 20, leads back via a wide, panoramic route to the Ponte di Ferro, already encountered on the ascent. From here, return to the parking area by the same path. The descent time is about 2 hours and 30 minutes from the end of the equipped trail, for a total hike of about 6 hours and 30 minutes.

There is a return variant that includes the Ferrata al Sasso dei Carbonari without reaching the summit of Grigna: climbing the ferrata leads to the Bocchetta di Releccio (2263 m, about 1h 30' from the start). From here, keeping right, descend toward the Bivacco Ugo Merlini, then continue downhill until you intercept the steep trail 16A, which drops along the Via dei Chignoli (with short equipped sections). Once on trail 16, you can choose to return to the right toward the entrance of Val Cassina or to the left toward Rifugio Elisa. This option, more technical and exposed, extends the total time to about 7-7 hours and 30 minutes.

Useful Notes

Despite its modest technical difficulties, the Sentiero Attrezzato della Val Cassina is a very long and physically demanding itinerary, given the considerable elevation gain to be overcome in a consistently steep environment. Two support points are available: Rifugio Elisa during the approach and Rifugio Bietti Buzzi on the descent. From the Bocchetta della Val Cassina, a partially equipped trail (trail marker 16B) allows you to reach the summit of Monte Cavallo in about 30 minutes. Combining this route with the Ferrata del CAI Mandello al Sasso dei Carbonari represents a splendid but exhausting opportunity to climb to the top of Grigna Settentrionale, transforming the itinerary into a challenging ridge traverse.
