Features
Description
Overview
The Sassella Rock Climbing Gym Via Ferrata is a compact route located on the outskirts of Sondrio. The setting is a compact limestone wall that hosts both the via ferrata and a sport climbing gym. The route is of modest difficulty and splits into two variants that rejoin at mid-height. Its standout feature is a three-rope suspension bridge linking the two sectors. The experience is short and low on technical demands, ideal as an introduction or as a complement to other activities.
Approach
The starting point is in the Sassella district, west of Sondrio. From the parking area, the rock wall with the installations is immediately visible across the road. A short, well-marked trail leads in just a few minutes to the information board and the start of the route. Access is quick and straightforward, letting you focus your time on the climb itself.
Via Ferrata
The via ferrata unfolds on a wall about sixty meters high, offering a short but varied progression in terms of terrain. The rock is limestone, with smooth slabs and some structured dihedrals. The two parallel routes ensure a fluid climbing rhythm, with limited exposure and moves always eased by an abundant supply of stirrups and handholds.
The right-hand sector begins with a gently sloping dihedral ramp that leads to a short vertical face. This opens into a brief overhang, made manageable by closely spaced stirrups. After this section, you reach the suspension bridge-a spectacular feature that lets you cross a void on three parallel cables. Beyond the bridge, the route continues on an angled slab, with an easy traverse to the left that brings you to the junction point with the other branch.
The left-hand sector starts about fifty meters further on from the right-hand entrance. The progression runs entirely up a vertical wall, but the constant presence of stirrups and artificial holds makes the climb very secure and not physically demanding. The pace is steady, with no significant technical passages.
From the meeting point of the two routes, you continue straight up a slabby face using the stirrups. Shortly, you emerge into the woods, where the steel cable ends and gives way to a fixed-rope trail that quickly finishes the ascent. The total climbing time for the via ferrata is about twenty minutes, excluding the approaches.
Descent
From the arrival point in the woods, the descent follows obvious trail tracks that branch off to the right. The path is short and quickly returns you to the base of the wall or the parking area, with no need for via ferrata gear.
Useful Notes
This via ferrata is short and never demanding, making it ideal to pair with a few climbing pitches on the nearby rock gym. The route was inaugurated on April 21, 2018, together with the climbing gym itself. Given the relative scarcity of via ferratas in Valtellina, the Sassella Via Ferrata can be a great addition to other routes in the area, such as the Torrione Porro Via Ferrata, the Croce al Palabione Via Ferrata, or those in Valchiavenna (Biasini and Succetti). Its character is mainly scenic and instructional, perfect for a first experience or a quick training session.
