Ferrata Torrione Porro

Overview

The Ferrata al Torrione Porro is a medium-difficulty route set in the upper Valmalenco. The entire line is fully equipped and features no particularly demanding technical passages, not even in its most exposed sections. The final objective offers exceptional views of the Ventina Glacier and the mighty Disgrazia Group. The route runs predominantly over solid rock, alternating diagonal traverses across ledges with compact vertical sections, ensuring a continuous, well-paced experience that is more scenic than physically punishing.

Approach

The starting point is the hamlet of Chiareggio. After parking, head to the far end of the village, where a staircase on the left descends toward a CAI signpost marking the start of the trail. Cross the bridge over the Mallero stream and take a gravel road that, with a moderate initial gradient that later becomes steeper, leads in about an hour to the Rifugio Gerli Porro. Past the hut, continue on the trail toward Lago Pirola until a well-marked junction. Here, take the left-hand path, indicated for the via ferrata, climbing a series of switchbacks to a second junction that separates the normal route from the via ferrata. Choosing the latter, you quickly reach the red start sign, located about thirty minutes from the hut, for a total of one hour and thirty minutes from the start. The approach unfolds in an open alpine environment, with a steady ascent that gradually prepares you for the effort ahead.

Via Ferrata

The first cables are encountered at a ramp ascending to the right. This introductory section, free of difficulty, leads to the first vertical pitches, characterized by an abundant presence of stirrups. The route is composed of short rocky steps and diagonal traverses, up to a subsequent diagonal ramp where the cable essentially serves as a handrail. The morphology is that of an articulated rocky ridge, allowing for fluid progression. The second part of the itinerary becomes decidedly more vertical and exposed, while remaining technically accessible thanks to the wealth of artificial holds and footholds. Three long walls with these characteristics are tackled; one of them includes a particularly airy passage where the rock formation tends to push the body outward, requiring greater physical effort. The rhythm here changes, becoming more sustained and continuous, with a fine exposure that amplifies the sensation of height. The via ferrata ends at a point where you can choose to climb left toward the summit of Torrione Porro (about fifty minutes from the start) or continue right to rejoin the normal route trail. The overall character is that of a well-balanced via ferrata, where exposure and verticality prevail over purely physical effort or extreme technical difficulty.

Descent

From the summit altar, descend along the normal route, which leads back to the junction encountered on the ascent. From here, continue down toward the Rifugio Gerli Porro and finally to the parking area in Chiareggio. The descent time from the summit is about one hour and thirty minutes, for a total excursion time of four hours. The descent trail, often traversing the mountainside, is easy and allows you to observe the terrain just tackled from a different perspective.

Useful Notes

This via ferrata, inaugurated in 2016, features modern equipment in excellent condition. The abundance of anchor points and holds, in some cases almost excessive, significantly reduces the technical difficulties, making the climb suitable even for hikers with moderate experience. It is important to remember that descending along the via ferrata is expressly forbidden, as indicated by appropriate signage. The route was built by the CAI of Valmalenco and the Valmalenco Mountain Guides. The itinerary is characterized by its linearity and excellent protection, offering a safe and highly rewarding experience in terms of views and environmental immersion.
