Located above Frassino (CN), the Chiaronto Via Ferrata offers an atypical experience, closer to a high-altitude adventure park than a traditional alpine ascent. The route unfolds along an articulated rocky ridge, characterized by short vertical walls alternating with ledges and small terraces. Its defining feature is the four suspension bridges, including one roughly seventy meters long, which create a discontinuous and spectacular rhythm. It presents no extreme technical difficulties, but reserves a central athletic section: an overhanging wall, which can be bypassed, with two very physical passages that heavily tax the arm muscles to overcome prominent rock bulges. The itinerary focuses entirely on excitement and variety, rather than on conquering a summit.
The starting point is the hamlet of Chiaronto. From Frassino, after the bar La Spada Reale, turn right and immediately left, following the signs for the hamlet, reachable after about three kilometers of paved road. Park near the small church. From the village, the limestone slabs hosting the route are already visible. Then, without possibility of error, follow the white-red trail markers and signs for the "Percorso Avventura di Chiaronto." The well-marked and well-defined trail climbs the grassy slope with a direct line, reaching the start of the ferrata in about fifteen minutes of walking.
The itinerary begins with a vertical ascent aided by a dense sequence of stirrups, leading to a first small ledge. Thus begins the sequence of bridges: the first presents itself as a singular tangle of steel cables surrounded by a net, to be traversed like a suspended walkway. After crossing it, a short trail section, including a descent equipped with stirrups, leads to a second net structure, which this time must be climbed from the inside, offering an unusual sensation of climbing inside a metal cage. Exiting this passage and completing the wall with more stirrups, you face the second suspension bridge, this time a classic three-rope bridge, rather unstable and swaying.
You then arrive at the key passage of the entire ferrata: an overhanging wall about twenty meters high. Although short, it is physically very demanding and defines the athletic character of the route. Two sections in particular feature very protruding bulges that, despite the presence of stirrups, require careful use of the legs to push and control balance, avoiding ending up dangling. Once these two sections are overcome, the difficulty quickly decreases. You then continue on a vertical wall aided by a long line of metal stirrups, a more methodical and continuous section.
This leads to the third bridge, of a different design: it is equipped with foot pegs, is more stable than the previous ones, but is more exposed and longer, measuring about sixty meters and developing on a slight incline. After crossing it and climbing a sloping ramp, you quickly reach the fourth and final suspension bridge, similar to the first with its metal net. A few meters beyond, you arrive at a wide ledge that marks the end of the equipped route.
From the end of the ferrata, a perfectly marked return trail starts, heading into the woods. The first section is quite steep and rough on loose terrain, then gradually becomes easier and traversing. The path leads directly back to the parking area in the hamlet of Chiaronto. The descent takes about thirty minutes from the end of the ferrata, for a total time of about two hours and thirty minutes.
This ferrata is atypical and configures itself as a high-adrenaline adventure route, whose value lies in the variety of obstacles and the spectacular nature of the bridges. The central overhanging wall deserves particular attention: it is extremely physically taxing and, if tackled without means of protection to rest, can be considered Extremely Difficult in its single passage. It is highly recommended to bring a short quickdraw or a sling to create intermediate rest points and give your arms a break during the most demanding sections.
The itinerary is not particularly long but can be tiring due to its intermittent and physical nature. For those who are well-trained and have arms in excellent shape, there is the possibility of combining it on the same day with the nearby and equally athletic Camoglieres Ferrata, reachable in about an hour by car. The Cuneo area offers numerous other via ferratas for all tastes, such as the Ferrata alla Rocca dei Corvi, the Ferrata dei Funs at Entracque, the Ferrata degli Alpini at Oronaye, or the Ferrata del Bec Valletta at Limone Piemonte.
