Overview

The Harry Potter Via Ferrata is an instructional route designed to safely introduce young hikers to progression on equipped rock. The protected environment and short length make it an ideal place to learn how to use a harness, energy absorber, and basic techniques, while minimizing physical and psychological demands.

Approach

Access is from La Trinité, right next to the base of the Jolanda ski lifts. After parking in the large lot near the Hotel Jolanda, cross the bridge over the Lys stream, keeping to the right bank. Just beyond, on the right side of the bridge and next to a playground, you'll spot the objective: a massive isolated boulder. The approach follows a flat, well-defined trail and takes about five minutes to walk.

Via Ferrata

The route unfolds entirely on the southeast side of the large granite monolith, characterized by smooth slabs and well-defined ledges. The climb begins with an ascent up a stepped slab, where the rock offers good footholds trending to the right. A short horizontal traverse along a natural ledge leads to a modest rock step that can be overcome with just a few moves. Beyond this, you encounter a distinctive two-rope Tibetan bridge suspended over a cleft in the rock. After crossing it, the final obstacle is a short vertical wall equipped with metal stirrups, which leads directly to the top of the boulder. From the first cable to the last, the via ferrata takes about ten minutes of active climbing, for a total of fifteen minutes from leaving the parking lot. The summit, flat and spacious, hosts the launch station for a tyrolean traverse for a flying descent.

Descent

From the top, the return to ground does not require rappelling. Simply walk around the boulder on the north side and descend an easy grassy and scree-covered trail that leads back to the base. This return leg takes roughly fifteen minutes, bringing the total experience time to about thirty minutes, not including breaks.

Useful Notes

This via ferrata is designed as an absolute first experience, perfect for children but also suitable for novice adults. The route is mostly vertical but broken up by varied features, offering a didactic rhythm that never becomes monotonous. To safely use the tyrolean traverse, you must have a proper double-pulley kit and a harness with lanyards. For orientation and planning in the Monte Rosa area, detailed maps are recommended. Once they've successfully completed the Harry Potter Via Ferrata, younger climbers can test their new skills on the nearby Ferrata dei Bambini in Gressoney-Saint-Jean. For adults looking to progress, an excellent next step in terms of commitment and length is the Ferrata di Covarey or the Ferrata José Angster.
