Ferrata Harry Potter
Aosta · Italy

The Sentiero Attrezzato del Vofrede, also known as the Ferrata dello Sperone, is an accessible approach route that culminates in a strikingly beautiful high-altitude environment. The route winds through the Cignana valley, a rocky amphitheater dotted with alpine lakes, and serves as a prelude to the ascent of Mont Rous. A loop return through pastures and moraines completes an extremely rewarding circuit in the Valtournenche valley, in the Aosta Valley, offering an effective blend of moderate physical effort and tremendous panoramic rewards.
Access is via the state road that climbs from Chatillon toward Breuil-Cervinia. After passing the town of Valtournenche and the Perreres hydroelectric plant, look for a sand processing area on the left. Shortly after, on a straight stretch, a dirt road descends toward the stream. The recommended parking is roadside, before the bridge. If construction blocks access to the dirt road, you can continue a few meters on the main road and use a space on the right, with a slight lengthening of the approach. From the parking area, cross the bridge over the Marmore stream, turning right toward the fishing pond. Near the no-entry sign, take the wide trail that climbs the Creton stream valley, a debris-filled gully wedged between wooded slopes. Continue to a fork marked by a signpost, where you follow trail marker number 9 with yellow indications. The route then bends left, crosses a stream, and climbs a stepped section on polished rock. Continuing on a comfortable, well-trodden path, you reach another fork: ignore the left deviation toward the Vofrede glacier and continue straight along the moraine, tackling a series of moderate switchbacks until the start of the equipped path. The approach takes about 2 hours from the parking area, with a steady elevation gain that gradually prepares you for the high-altitude environment.
The equipped route begins with short rock faces on solid rock, followed by a horizontal traverse shifting onto a natural ledge. This traverse, though exposed, offers powerful holds and smooth progression. After rounding a subtle edge, you climb a few easy rock steps. The metal fixtures temporarily end, and you follow a trace over mixed terrain to a vertical wall, where you resume climbing easily, secured by the cable. The pace is pleasant, with short vertical sections interspersed with resting spots on small ledges. The route continues, overcoming a few non-steep rocky steps, until a panoramic balcony overlooking the Vofrede glacier below, offering a sudden and magnificent view. From here, you tackle a vertical wall of a few meters, not difficult, leading to a second ledge. Beyond this, the vertical section continues along an equipped path of modest difficulty, with a continuous cable and frequent holds. Finally, you cross a crack in the rock, now near the end, and cover the last few dozen meters on sloping slabs. The via ferrata ends on the plateau below the Castelletto Whymper, with a magnificent view of the Matterhorn standing out against the sky. The time for the via ferrata is about 1 hour and 30 minutes, for a total of 3 hours and 30 minutes from the parking area. From the end of the equipped path, proceed west (left) across the scree, following yellow marks and cairns, toward the Colle di Vofrede at 3130 meters, the highest point of the hike, reachable in about 30 minutes from the end of the ferrata (4 hours total). This final section on scree is physical but lacks technical difficulty.
From the Colle di Vofrede, descend west toward the Gran Lago, following a faint trail trace that gets lost in the debris, until reaching the eastern shore of the basin. The morphology here is broad and glacial, dominated by debris and rounded rocks. Follow the retaining wall downhill to a small ruin with a collapsed roof. From this structure, take the trail that, shortly after, connects to a wider, well-trodden path climbing the slope where the Rifugio Perucca Vuillermoz stands. From the refuge, follow trail 6 - Alta Via 3 toward the Bivacco Manenti, overcoming a series of regular switchbacks. The bivouac overlooks the shores of Lake Balanselmo, in a setting of alpine tranquility. Continue with a long, pleasant, and panoramic traverse at mid-slope until reaching the Alpe di Chevalley. The route continues briefly on a dirt road to a saddle, where you take trail 107. Keeping left toward the Rifugio La Riondè, proceed toward the now-visible sand quarry, then return to the parking area. The descent takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes from the end of the equipped path, for a total of 7 hours and 30 minutes of hiking. The return is characterized by a steady rhythm and a gradual re-entry into vegetation.
It is essential to consider that, upon reaching the Colle di Vofrede, you are less than halfway through the complete route in terms of overall effort. The descent, while presenting no technical difficulties, takes place in a remote area, and the trail is not always well-marked, especially in the initial section from the col to the Gran Lago. It is strongly recommended to use a GPS track, especially in case of cloud cover, fog, or for hikers with limited experience navigating alpine terrain. For those wishing to extend the adventure, from the Colle di Vofrede there is a variant to the summit of Mont Rous (3242 m). From the col, ascend toward Punta Cian following yellow marks; on the right, a trail branches off that climbs the summit ridge of Mont Rous. The trace, at times faint in the scree, reappears higher up on more stable rock, leading to the summit in about 30 minutes of ascent (50 minutes round trip from the col). The climb adds an alpine element and a 360-degree panorama. In the same valley, you can tackle the challenging Ferrata del Gorbeillon. For other experiences in the area, descending toward Chatillon and continuing toward Aosta, you'll find the Ferrata Emilius and the Sentiero Attrezzato Panorama, while heading toward Turin, the Ferrata di Covarey is accessible, offering a range of choices for enthusiasts of the genre.
