Sentiero Attrezzato Sasse

Overview

The Sentiero Attrezzato Sasse is a fixed-rope route of great scenic value that traces a loop along the eastern shore of Lake Idro, connecting the villages of Vesta and Baitoni. This route, which can be hiked in either direction, demands only modest technical commitment and makes an excellent choice for a first taste of via ferrata hiking. The starting point is La Busetta beach in Vesta, on the Brescian side of the lake. Once you reach the village, walk through it until the road makes a wide curve and comes right down to the water. Here you'll find a large parking area; just before this parking spot, a metal signpost marks the trailhead.

Approach

From the parking area, follow the marked trail heading north. The path skirts the Corna di Fenere climbing crag until you reach a major trail junction: to the right, the Sentiero dei Contrabbandieri (Smugglers' Trail) branches off (this will be your return route), to the left a path descends toward Prato della Fame, while you continue straight on the main route. In about twenty minutes of walking from the parking area, you'll reach the start of the fixed cables of the Sentiero Attrezzato Sasse at Dosso della Madonnina.

Via Ferrata

The fixed-rope route begins with a descending section that gradually leads down toward lake level. First, you tackle a trail protected by a handrail cable on the right, then step onto an exposed ledge. The route runs along a band of compact rock, typical of the lake's limestone formations, offering an airy but secure traverse. A short vertical descent down a small rock face follows, made easier by several well-anchored metal staples. This brings you to the most iconic section of the route: a long traverse just above the surface of Lake Idro. You walk along a wide ledge, crossing a couple of rocky steps and an easy traverse. This spectacular stretch, always descending and with a steady, pleasant rhythm, leads to the suspension bridge, which also marks the first escape point on the route. The bridge is stable and well-equipped with wooden planks for footing, and you cross it safely (30 minutes from the start, 50 minutes total).

After the bridge, you climb up an easy vertical rock face equipped with metal rungs. The trail continues with a series of rocky steps and a section of constant ups and downs-not difficult, but potentially slippery due to loose soil. The exposure remains generally moderate, alternating between protected sections and brief airy passages. Watch out for two successive equipped descents, which require simple down-climbing, separated by a traverse over dry rock. The route, always of moderate difficulty, reaches its final part, where you cross a small rocky gully by walking over some placed logs. The Sentiero Attrezzato Sasse ends at a white sign that marks the start for those coming from Baitoni (1 hour 30 minutes from the start, 1 hour 50 minutes total). The character of the route is predominantly horizontal and easy-going, with constant attention to the lake panorama.

Descent

From the end of the fixed cables, continue north on the trail until you reach a metal signpost indicating the Sentiero dei Contrabbandieri. This return route follows a path similar to the approach but at a higher elevation. It begins with a fairly steep climb and proceeds, with fixed cables on the more exposed ledges, to a junction. Here, to the left, the Sentiero dei Tralicci (Powerline Trail) branches off. You can choose either one: the Sentiero dei Tralicci climbs higher but rejoins the main trail before the end. Continuing on either path, you reach the junction you encountered during the approach to the Sentiero Attrezzato Sasse. From here, retrace the approach trail back to the parking area (1 hour from the end of the fixed cables, 3 hours total for the loop). The descent takes place in a forested environment, with a more physical but technically simple walk.

Useful Notes

This route is an excellent choice for those approaching fixed-rope trails for the first time, with generally limited exposure and modest technical difficulty. It can be hiked in either direction. Avoid periods immediately after heavy rainfall, as several sections on soil can become very slippery. Thanks to its low elevation, it's accessible almost year-round. For maps, the Parco Alto Garda Bresciano or Giudicarie, Val di Daone e Valle del Chiese maps are recommended. The Sentiero Attrezzato Sasse, not particularly strenuous, leaves enough energy to consider other equipped routes in the Lake Idro area, such as the easy Sentiero Attrezzato alle Cascate di Idro or the short Ferrata a Cima Ora. For experienced hikers, more challenging itineraries are available in the same area, such as the Ferrata Crench or the Fregio and delle Ginestre ferratas. The overall experience is scenic and accessible, ideal for appreciating the lake's morphology without excessive technical effort.
