Ferrata Arenazzo

Overview

The Ferrata Arenazzo is a beginner-level via ferrata that winds through the rocky gorge carved by the stream of the same name, inside the Parco Nazionale dell'Appennino Lucano Val D'Agri. The route's defining feature is its two suspension bridges, the larger of which stretches roughly forty meters, delivering an engaging experience that remains accessible even for beginners. Access to the excursion starts from the village of Sasso di Castalda, in the province of Potenza, Basilicata.

Approach

From Sasso di Castalda, follow the clear signage to the well-known Ponte alla Luna. From this point, take the blue trail markers bearing the words "Ferrata Arenazzo," which descend via a path through the wooded slope down to the streambed of the Arenazzo torrent, where the equipped section begins.

Via Ferrata

The equipped route starts with an easy descending protected trail that leads to the first of the two bridges. This is a three-rope Tibetan bridge, roughly fifteen meters long and suspended about eight meters high. Though short, this first crossing introduces hikers to the characteristic swaying motion of rope bridges. After crossing, a short vertical section equipped with metal stirrups allows for a diagonal progression up a compact wall, typical of the local limestone rock. The route then continues with a traverse featuring a few ups and downs over small rock steps and ledges, with no particular technical difficulty but with increasing exposure over the gorge below.

Following this traverse, a sloping slab in descent leads to the second and more challenging bridge. This four-rope Tibetan bridge is the highlight of the excursion: at forty meters long and twenty meters high, it offers an adrenaline-pumping passage that demands balance and control. The rhythm of the route-up to this point rather uneven, alternating between short vertical sections and horizontal traverses-culminates in this test of nerve and equilibrium. The via ferrata ends after crossing this bridge. The estimated time for the equipped section alone is about forty minutes.

Descent

Once the ferrata is complete, the return to Sasso di Castalda follows a comfortable hiking trail with no technical difficulties. The total time for the entire excursion, including approach, ferrata, and descent, is about one hour and fifteen minutes.

Useful Notes

Despite its easy rating, this ferrata requires a steady step and no fear of heights due to the inherent swaying of the long Tibetan bridge, which is its key and most exposed passage. The route pairs well with the nearby Ferrata Belvedere, following the signs on site. In the same area, enthusiasts can explore other equipped routes such as the Ferrata Marcirosa and the Ferrata Salemm, also in the Dolomiti Lucane, or the scenic protected path to the Cristo Redentore di Maratea.
