Ferrata Belvedere

Overview

The Ferrata Belvedere is a modern addition to the hiking network around Sasso di Castalda, in Basilicata, joining the already popular attractions of the Ponte alla Luna and the Ferrata Arenazzo. This route is characterized by its moderate technical demands, further eased by the installation of numerous steel steps that simplify progression. It is therefore an ideal choice for a first approach to via ferrata climbing or for a day of scenic, enjoyable scrambling.

The itinerary unfolds mainly across compact limestone walls, offering a continuous and well-paced experience. The route's morphology alternates short vertical sections with ledges and traverses, maintaining a moderate exposure that does not compromise accessibility. The overall character is that of a panoramic, instructional via ferrata, where the technical aspect is balanced by easy progression and constant views of the surrounding landscape.

Approach

The starting point is the village of Sasso di Castalda, in the province of Potenza, within the Parco Nazionale dell'Appennino Lucano Val D'Agri. From Potenza, head south to reach the protected area. For those planning to tackle both local ferratas, the most efficient strategy is to climb the Ferrata Arenazzo first. At its end, signs lead in a few minutes to the start of the Ferrata Belvedere. Alternatively, starting directly from the village, head toward the access to the Ponte alla Luna; from there, following the dedicated signage, you reach the via ferrata's entrance with a walk of about ten minutes.

Via Ferrata

The itinerary begins with a vertical section on an equipped wall, made easy by the presence of numerous steel steps. Progression continues along a flat section, alternating short passages over easy rock with segments of equipped trail, until you encounter a second vertical wall. This passage, though more demanding, is more slabby than the first and, thanks to the support of the steps, presents no significant technical difficulties.

After this section, you tackle an equipped traverse, made secure by footholds, during which you pass beneath the imposing structure of the Ponte alla Luna. The traverse runs along a well-defined ledge, offering a contained yet evocative exposure. At the end of the traverse, an escape route is available. To complete the loop, you climb a final vertical wall near the Belvedere, similar in character to the previous ones and facilitated by hand and foot steps. The Ferrata Belvedere ends here, after approximately 45 minutes from the start.

The pace of the route is steady and without significant interruptions, with moderate ups and downs that maintain a constant but not excessive physical effort. The development is predominantly vertical in the equipped sections, interspersed with horizontal stretches that allow you to admire the panorama over the surrounding valleys. The rocky environment, typical of the Lucanian Apennines, lends solidity to footholds and handholds.

Descent

The end of the via ferrata coincides with arrival at the Ponte alla Luna. From here, following the abundant signage, you take a characteristic alley that quickly leads back to the village of Sasso di Castalda and the parking area. The descent takes about 20 minutes, for a total time of approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
