Ferrata Salemm

Overview

The Ferrata Salemm is a moderately difficult alpine route that climbs the southern flank of Castelmezzano, in the heart of the Dolomiti Lucane. The ascent combines demanding vertical progression with long, airy traverses and spectacular views, offering a complete and rewarding experience for hikers already familiar with this kind of terrain. The route alternates between rock climbing sections, ridgelines, and ledges, requiring good physical fitness and a solid head for exposure.

Approach

The logistical base is the village of Castelmezzano (PZ), accessible both from the SP 13 from Potenza and from Puglia. It is recommended to park near the cemetery. From here, take the Sentiero delle Sette Pietre (Trail of the Seven Stones) heading toward the Ponte Romano (Roman Bridge), which is the starting point for the actual approach.

From the Ponte Romano, keeping left at two consecutive, well-marked junctions, you follow the left orographic bank of the Caperrino stream. The trail, initially descending, takes about 45 minutes from the bridge (for a total of roughly one hour from the Ponte Romano) to reach the start of the Ferrata Salemm. It is essential not to take the wrong direction: following the right bank of the stream would instead lead to the access for the Ferrata Marcirosa and the Nepalese bridge.

For a more varied approach, you can detour toward the Nepalese bridge before tackling the Salemm. Following the signs for the Marcirosa, at a junction keep left toward the long suspension bridge. Once across, you traverse a short connecting via ferrata section, mostly traversing to the right and quite exposed, which leads to a stone structure. Here the actual Ferrata Salemm begins.

Via Ferrata

From the start, after a few easy sections of equipped trail, you face a first slabby wall, rich with metal rungs. You climb it while moving left, then tackle a vertical, well-equipped wall that leads into a ramp sloping left. The progression continues along an easy gully and a few short slabs, then continues on slabby rock heading toward a ridge.

Another stretch of equipped trail brings you to the base of a smooth, vertical wall, which is bypassed via a spectacular and exposed horizontal traverse to the left. After the traverse ends with a descent, you continue on a trail, climb a short rocky step, and pass beneath a characteristic wedged boulder.

The route then winds along a sharp descending ridge, interspersed with traverses and vertical steps, in a highly evocative setting. This sequence, always descending, leads to a stone structure known as the chiesetta del Santo Sepolcro (Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre), where there is a first marked escape route.

From here, the itinerary heads decisively toward Castelmezzano, engaging the hiker in a long and gripping horizontal traverse along a rocky gorge, supported by rungs and pegs. The traverse, done in descent, first runs under a roof and then progressively gains exposure, shifting left. After a few short vertical sections, you reach the end of the fixed gear. The via ferrata takes about 2 hours from the start, for a total of roughly 3 hours from the beginning of the hike.

Descent

From the end of the ferrata, a clear trail allows you to reach a paved road (via Peschiere) on the outskirts of Castelmezzano in about ten minutes. From here, continue on foot toward the village center, then climb back up to the parking area at the cemetery. The return from the end of the ferrata to the starting point takes about 45 minutes, bringing the total duration of the hike to about 3 hours and 45 minutes.

Useful Notes

The rock of the Dolomiti Lucane on which the Ferrata Salemm is developed is particularly friable and often lacking natural holds, a condition that can make progression more difficult and slippery when the rock is wet or after recent rains. Two escape routes are marked along the route.

The ferrata is not passable between February 1st and May 31st, as indicated by specific signage, presumably for reasons of wildlife protection or unfavorable environmental conditions.

For those wanting to tackle a more complete loop, it is possible to combine the Ferrata Salemm with the nearby Ferrata Marcirosa. The advice is to park at the Castelmezzano cemetery, take the Sentiero delle Sette Pietre to the Ponte Romano, turn left for the Marcirosa as far as Pietrapertosa, return to the Ponte Romano still on the Sentiero delle Sette Pietre, reach the start of the Marcirosa, cross the suspension bridge, follow the equipped connecting section, and finally tackle the Salemm, which will end in Castelmezzano. The return to the parking area is then on foot through the village.
