Overview

The Ferrata dei Piceni is the only equipped route in the Marche region, located near Pioraco in the province of Macerata. Built recently, it is rated as easy, though it does include some athletic sections that require a minimum level of physical fitness. The overall length is modest, and thanks to the low elevation, it is accessible for much of the year, offering an experience in a landscape setting of remarkable beauty.

Approach

The starting point is near Pioraco (MC). Driving along the SP 361 toward the town, you will spot a sign indicating the "Cartiere di Fabriano." About two hundred meters beyond, on the left, take a paved road that climbs up to a small church; nearby there is a parking area. From here, the first signs for the via ferrata are already visible. Precise coordinates for Google Maps can be found online.

Via Ferrata

From the parking area, follow the signs and CAI trail markers along a forest path that leads in about thirty minutes to the red plaque marking the start of the equipped section. The first stretch of cable serves mainly as a handrail on a gentle descent. Then you begin climbing up on low-difficulty equipped rock, surrounded by woodland; the presence of moss can sometimes reduce traction.

The route initially develops over smooth slabs, typical of the local limestone, forming a system of ledges and small steps. The progression continues toward a wall whose start is slightly overhanging, then moves into vertical terrain. The rock, particularly polished, makes the climb challenging, but the abundant use of iron rungs and metal stirrups greatly facilitates progress. The pace is steady, with increasing exposure concentrated in the central vertical sections.

After a horizontal stretch, you face the key passage: a vertical wall topped by an overhanging roof. The first two carabiner changes on this section require decent arm strength; the artificial stirrups provide support, but this passage should not be underestimated. This sector represents the technical heart of the route, where athletic effort combines with moderate exposure.

Once past this section, a short ladder allows you to continue climbing, always assisted by numerous rungs, gradually shifting to the right along a secondary ridge. Shortly after, you reach the end of the ferrata, marked by the guestbook box. The climbing time from the start is estimated between thirty minutes and one hour.

Descent

The return route involves briefly hiking back up the trail to a well-marked junction. From there, descend through the forest to return to the starting point. The descent takes about twenty minutes from the end of the ferrata, for a total round-trip time of approximately one hour and twenty minutes.

Useful Notes

This via ferrata in the Marche takes place in a little-visited environment but with undeniable scenic appeal. The route is interesting, though the type of rock and the extensive use of metal equipment strongly characterize its style of progression. The path alternates vertical sections and short horizontal stretches, with a predominantly technical-gymnastic character that makes use of artificial structures. Despite a couple of more athletic and demanding passages, the ferrata remains suitable even for beginners with a minimum of training. For those looking to combine other experiences, the nearest equipped routes are in the Gran Sasso massif (such as the Ferrate Danesi, Ventricini, Ricci, Brizio, at Bivacco Bafile, and the Sentiero del Centenario) or, in Umbria, the Ferrata delle Gole del Serra.
