Ferrata Pra Catinat

Overview

The Pra Catinat via ferrata is a route designed for an exceptionally broad audience. Its accessibility makes it suitable for hikers without any specific mountaineering training and, with appropriate assistance, even for people with disabilities. The southeast exposure and elevation of around 1600 meters ensure prolonged sunlight, guaranteeing good conditions for travel in all seasons, with a lower risk of ice or persistent dampness.

Approach

The access point for the route is at the Hotel Pra Catinat, located above the hamlet of Depot, in the province of Turin. From Depot, continue along provincial road 172 in the direction of Agnelli, Pequerel, and Puy. From the hotel parking lot, the trail to the gorge departs on the left side of the building. A short, clearly marked walk of about 15 minutes leads to the information board that marks the start of the ferrata.

Via Ferrata

The route opens with a short rocky step equipped with a cable, immediately introducing the use of safety gear. Right after, the path takes a long traverse to the right, which initially develops across a grassy slope. The terrain is undulating, with gentle ups and downs, maintaining a very low difficulty level. The environment is characterized by limestone or dolomitic rock, forming a series of natural ledges. The progression is continuous and relaxed, with moderate exposure that allows you to gradually acclimate to the vertical environment.

You then reach a more compact rock face, where the traverse becomes more exposed. The equipment becomes denser, offering a combination of handholds and footholds that facilitate safe passage. This section, while remaining technically simple, introduces a greater awareness of the airy environment, with the view beginning to open up over the valley below.

Past this stretch, a short downclimb of a few meters, aided by a couple of footholds, leads to a broad natural terrace. From here begins a new horizontal traverse, morphologically similar to the previous one, which winds along a panoramic ledge. The pace is pleasantly steady, allowing you to fully enjoy the scenery without any significant technical effort.

The final part offers a distinct change in character: a vertical section of climbing on well-equipped rock. This short sequence, while not demanding, adds a more pronounced technical component and a satisfying sense of accomplishment upon completion. Once past this section, you arrive at the summit plateau, concluding the equipped portion. The travel time for the ferrata is about 1 hour, for a total of about 1 hour and 15 minutes from the start of the approach.

Descent

From the summit, the return is simple and intuitive. Follow a clear hiking trail, well-marked and gently sloping, which leads back to the Hotel Pra Catinat and the parking lot in short order. This descent section takes about 20 minutes of walking, bringing the total loop time to about 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Useful Notes

This is classifiable as an easy via ferrata (difficulty A or B), ideal for beginners looking to tackle a first approach in complete safety. The route is characterized predominantly by horizontal or gently sloping traverses, with a very modest overall elevation gain. The nature of the itinerary is more about panoramic views and easy progression than technical or physical challenge.

Throughout the route, you enjoy an exceptional panorama of the Val Chisone, with direct views of the villages of Villaretto and Roreto Chisone. On the clearest days, the gaze can extend as far as the distant Rocca di Cavour, rising from the plain. For those who, after this pleasant introductory experience, wish to try a more challenging itinerary, the area offers several alternatives a short drive away, such as the Ferrata Nicola Ciardelli (reachable in about 20 minutes) or the via ferratas of the Claviere area.
