Sentiero Attrezzato della Val Scarettone
Lecco · Italy

Grigna Meridionale · Lecco · Italy
The Sentiero Attrezzato Cecilia serves as a strategic link between Rifugio Rosalba and the Cresta Cerminati trail, the final route to the summit of Grigna Meridionale (Grignetta). More than a vertical climb, this is a diagonal itinerary that traverses the base of the majestic Cresta Segantini. The route unfolds through a succession of traverses and ascents, offering varied and continuous progression in a landscape of great visual impact, characterized by broad ledges and passages on solid rock.
The access point for the hike is the Piani dei Resinelli area, above Ballabio (LC), where it is recommended to park near the former Rifugio Alippi.
The approach to the start of the via ferrata involves reaching Rifugio Rosalba. The most common way is to follow trail 9, the well-known Sentiero Attrezzato delle Foppe, which leads to the refuge in about 1 hour and 45 minutes. There is a more direct and challenging variant, the Sentiero Attrezzato dei Morti, which cuts the time by about fifteen minutes, reaching the destination in 1 hour and 30 minutes.
From Rifugio Rosalba, the equipped route proper begins. Take trail 10, which in about 10 minutes, already with the first sections protected by steel cable, leads to Colle Garibaldi (1824 m). Continue on the Val Scarettone side, overcoming a few short equipped passages, until reaching Colle Valsecchi (1898 m), the junction point with the Sentiero Attrezzato della Direttissima. Here, continue straight, ignoring the left deviation for the Sentiero Attrezzato della Val Scarettone.
The characteristic section of the Sentiero Cecilia now unfolds with a long and spectacular diagonal traverse beneath the imposing Pilone Centrale of the Cresta Segantini, extensively protected by chains. The progression alternates between easier trail sections and passages over rock slabs, ledges, and traverses, sometimes equipped with chains and sometimes not, requiring constant attention. You also tackle a few short exposed walls, though they are well-supplied with holds. The route concludes by joining trail 7 of the Cresta Cermenati, where the difficulties noticeably diminish. With a final few passages aided by chains, you eventually reach the summit of Grigna Meridionale. The travel time from the refuge is about 1 hour and 30 minutes, for a total of approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes from the parking area.
From the summit of Grignetta, several return options are possible. The first involves retracing the Sentiero Cecilia in reverse (or, alternatively, descending via the Sentiero della Val Scarettone, not recommended for less experienced climbers in descent) back to Rifugio Rosalba, and from there descending to the parking area via the Foppe or Morti trails, for a total of about 5 hours and 30 minutes.
The second option, longer but very rewarding, is to create a large loop. Descend from the southern side along the Cresta Cermenati to Rifugio Carlo Porta, then return to the parking area. A more technical variant of this loop involves descending via the Sentiero Attrezzato della Cresta Sinigaglia before reaching Rifugio Porta. This loop itinerary has an estimated total duration of about 7 hours.
Given the route's configuration, which winds for long stretches in a traverse beneath the Cresta Segantini (a mountaineering route), wearing a helmet for the entire duration of the via ferrata is strongly recommended to protect against potential rockfall from above. It is also necessary to pay maximum attention to the trail markers, which consist of blue and red circles, to avoid losing the correct path in some less obvious passages.
The Sentiero Attrezzato Cecilia lends itself perfectly to being combined with other itineraries, both on the ascent (for example, with the Sentiero delle Foppe) and on the descent, to create highly satisfying loop routes within the Gruppo delle Grigne.
