Ferrata Bergkristall

Overview

The Bergkristall Via Ferrata is a modern, compact route traced across the rock faces of the upper Val Passiria, near Pfelders. The route unfolds on a solid rock slab, immediately adjacent to the campsite of the same name. The itinerary is structured into two short, independent variants that merge midway up the wall; both present a moderate overall challenge, making them an ideal choice for a short, enjoyable outing, also well-suited for instructional purposes.

Approach

The starting point coincides with the Bergkristall Campsite in the upper Val Passiria. From Vipiteno, head up the valley toward Moso, then follow signs for Pfelders; the campsite can be reached in about fifteen minutes. The start of the route lies on the opposite side of the stream. The approach is extremely quick: a well-defined trail leads directly to the base of the wall, already clearly visible. After crossing the bridge, in just a few minutes (about 5 minutes from the car), you'll reach the first start on the right; climbing a few meters to the left reveals the beginning of the second variant.

Via Ferrata

The itinerary consists of two distinct variants that converge in the middle section.

Moderately Difficult Variant This is the first option you encounter. It begins with a vertical section, followed by a traverse to the right that leads to a second wall. You'll overcome a couple of rocky steps before entering a climb that bends left. In a few minutes, this route joins, with a slight descent, the second variant coming from the left. The progression is continuous and well-paced, on solid, well-shaped rock, with moderate exposure that allows you to get comfortable with the vertical environment.

Easy Variant The second route is predominantly easy, with a couple of moves that can be classified as moderately difficult. It starts with a ramp to the right, followed by a vertical wall and a subsequent traverse to the right. After a few meters, a short descending section allows you to intercept the first variant arriving from the right. The route unfolds across ledges and gently sloping slabs, offering a calm, scenic progression, ideal for a first experience.

Common Section From the junction, the single route continues with the ascent of a vertical slab about twenty meters high. Once past this, you tackle a long traverse to the left. After the traverse, beneath imposing walls with black and yellowish hues, you follow a final equipped descending section that concludes the technical part of the Bergkristall Via Ferrata. This final sector, exposed and continuous, delivers a sense of satisfaction and a broad view of the valley, while maintaining a contained technical challenge and good protection.

Descent

From the exit of the route, follow the trail marked as 14B. After a stretch, this joins a gravel road; keeping right, you return to the starting parking area. The descent takes about 40 minutes. The total time for the excursion, considering the variants, is around 3 hours and 30 minutes.

Useful Notes

This is a short via ferrata with equipment in excellent condition, having been inaugurated in 2024. It's a great option for a short day or for gaining confidence in a safe, modern environment. Its location in the upper Val Passiria, near Pfelders, makes it easily accessible. Despite its brevity, the route offers a good variety of movements and a climbing experience on compact, well-shaped rock, in a scenic and well-exposed setting.
