Climbing above Merano

Via Ferrata Heini Holzer follows the southwestern face of Picco Ivigna above Merano. Slabs, gullies and ledges shape the climb, with views towards the Dolomites, the Adige Valley and the Texel Group. The Engelskante section near the finish provides a particularly airy passage. Built in 2016, the route commemorates local steep-skiing pioneer Heini Holzer.

Approach and return

This itinerary uses the Merano 2000 lifts. From the upper station at Pivigna, follow trail 3 and then trail 18, the Schartlweg, towards the start. Beyond the ferrata, a junction gives access to the Ivigna summits; the return leads towards Kuhleiten hut and trail 19A. The listed maximum elevation of 2,581 metres belongs to Grande Picco Ivigna, reached by an optional extension. It is not the elevation of the ferrata exit itself.

Timing and preparation

Ferrate365 lists approximately 670 metres of ascent for the complete outing. Merano 2000 recommends allowing 3–4 hours for the climb, plus the descent, so leave extra time beyond the technical table's two and a half hours. The local grading is A–B with B/C passages. There are no escape routes or water sources along the ferrata. Carry complete equipment and enough water, and check the weather, route status and lift operating hours before setting off.
