Ferrata Cospiti

Overview

The Ferrata di Cospita is a circular itinerary between Pogerola (Amalfi) and San Lazzaro (Agerola) in Campania. Its stated total length is about 2.4 km, with limited elevation gain, and it follows unofficial paths almost throughout. The itinerary includes a short but significant via ferrata section and is graded EE, for experienced hikers, with an overall easy difficulty rating. It is not recommended for anyone uncomfortable with heights, and dense vegetation can make some sections demanding.

Approach

The starting point is Pogerola, above Amalfi, where free parking is available along the road towards the hospital. Pogerola can also be reached by regular SITA Sud buses from central Amalfi, or on foot along CAI trail 359. The walking option adds about 2.5 km and approximately 300 metres of ascent, taking about an extra hour on the outward journey and 45 minutes on the return.

The hiking itinerary starts at Piazza G. Amodio. Follow CAI trail 361a to an elevation of 452 metres.

Via Ferrata

At 452 metres, leave the official path for a less obvious mule track across the rock faces of Monte Scorca. This stretch offers views of numerous natural cavities, including the caves housing the atmospheric cemetery of Pogerola, one of the Amalfi Coast's most distinctive.

Beyond Monte Scorca, enter a valley crossed by the stream fed by the Acqua dell'Orto spring. The route alternates Mediterranean scrub with exposed ledges originally built for old aqueducts.

Leaving the valley, a steep ascent through a particularly steep gully leads to the ruins of Convento di Cospita, a suitable place for a short break. Continue along trail 369 to the start of the Ferrata di Cospita, which runs for about 500 metres and must be completed in full. The equipped section requires sure-footedness and appropriate equipment.

Descent

At the end of the ferrata, join trail 369a and follow it east to trail 301 at Nespola. Follow trail 301 for about 3 km to its junction with trail 361a. This descends with scenic views to Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Fondi and eventually returns to Pogerola, completing the loop.

Useful Notes

The via ferrata is about 500 metres long and forms part of a hiking itinerary graded EE. Confidence on exposed ground and a complete via ferrata equipment set are necessary, particularly a helmet, harness and via ferrata set. Water is available at San Lazzaro. The itinerary passes several notable locations, including Piazza Avitabile in San Lazzaro, Convento di Cospita and the Nespola area, at elevations of approximately 630 to 780 metres. The route is not recommended in rain or on wet ground, as vegetation and exposed sections can make progress more difficult.
