Ferrata del Monte Amariana

Overview

Mount Amariana, known locally as "La Mariane," rises to 1,905 meters, standing like a massive bastion in the Carnic Prealps. Its pivotal position at the meeting point of the Fella and Tagliamento river basins guarantees an exceptional 360-degree panoramic view. The route described here is the via ferrata on the southern slope, a medium-length itinerary (about 7 km total) with moderate difficulty, perfect for a day hike.

Approach

Access to the hike begins at the Forca del Cristo pass (980 m), reachable by car from Amaro along the military road. From here, the approach starts on trail CAI 414, which first winds through the forest of cuel dai noglars. The route, well-marked and intuitive, gains elevation steadily. After passing the wooded belt, the trail opens into a wide meadow, offering the first sweeping views of the Monte San Simeone slope. After about 2.6 km of walking, you reach the start of the via ferrata at roughly 1,700 meters elevation, with no chance of error. This initial phase is a classic approach, with a steady pace and progressive elevation gain that prepares you for the technical ascent ahead.

Via Ferrata

The start is clearly marked by red CAI signage. The route initially develops by ascending a gully with a loose, unstable bottom for about 500 meters. This section, while easy from a technical standpoint, is the most delicate of the entire itinerary: the gully's morphology, with often friable rock, requires maximum attention to avoid dislodging material. Wearing a helmet is mandatory, and progression must be cautious, especially in the presence of other hikers. The steel cables are continuous and well-anchored throughout the ascent. Once past the gully, you emerge onto a small saddle. The route then continues on easy sloping ramps, always fully equipped, which develop on more compact rock with limited exposure. This second section is pleasantly airy and scenic, with a smoother progression rhythm. After the cables end, a short final trail, unroped, leads in a few minutes to the summit (1,905 m). The total ascent time from the start is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Descent

Several alternatives are available for the return. The simplest and most direct option is returning via the ascent route, completing a loop in about 4 hours and 45 minutes total. A more varied alternative involves descending from the northern slope, using the other via ferrata and heading toward the Pradut saddle, with the possibility of a stop at the Cimenti Floreanini bivouac (1,067 m), then continuing to Illeggio (607 m). A third possibility, longer and more hiking-oriented, follows the eastern ridge, touching the Pian d'Aiars shelter (1,475 m) and M. Forcella (1,098 m), then descending southwest to the bridge over the Fella River, known as the "Ponte della Carnia." Options that do not return to the starting point require organizing two vehicles.

Useful Notes

The southern via ferrata of Mount Amariana is recommended in spring or autumn; during the summer months, the relatively low elevation and southern exposure can lead to high temperatures. Although classifiable as a protected trail for hikers with good mountain experience (the ascent is doable even without continuous use of a harness), the absolute necessity of wearing a helmet is emphasized once again, especially in the initial gully section, due to the objective risk of falling rocks. The route benefits from the excellent maintenance and enhancement work of the CAI of Tolmezzo, which has created a network of itineraries in the area. With the use of two cars, it is possible to combine the ascent with other nearby routes, such as the Amarianute or the Sentiero Alpinistico Mario della Marta, using this via ferrata for the descent. On the summit, a pilgrimage destination, a statue of the Madonna has stood since 1957, blessed by Pope John Paul II in 1992. The entire Carnia area offers numerous other interesting via ferratas for enthusiasts.
