Description
Overview
The Ferrata degli Alpini allo Zuc della Guardia is a short, pleasant protected climbing route set in the Carnic Alps. It follows a direct and efficient line to the summit, offering continuous but not overly demanding climbing, classifiable as medium difficulty. The itinerary lends itself perfectly to being combined with other via ferratas in the fascinating Carnic region, often serving as the first stage of a day dedicated to protected climbing.
Approach
The route begins at the Passo del Cason di Lanza (1552 m), in the province of Udine, reachable from both Paularo and Pontebba. The access from Pontebba, about 13 km long, is generally preferable due to the better condition of the paved road. From Pontebba, follow the signs for Studena Bassa and continue up the valley to the pass, where a large parking area with services is available. After leaving your vehicle, head south across the road and take a dirt track towards an abandoned white and green barracks. Ignore a first sign on the right for Monte Zermula and continue until you intercept the sign for Forca di Lanza, following trail 442a. The approach proceeds with a steady climb, offering a clear view of Zuc della Guardia right from the start. After a stretch through the woods, you reach a first junction at about 1700 m (30 minutes from the parking lot): here, ignore the deviation to the right (the normal descent route) and continue on trail 442a. Reaching a second junction at 1815 m (about 15 minutes later), keep left towards the saddle between Zuc della Guardia and Monte Pizzul. The trail, now more open, leads to the start of the via ferrata, recognizable by a metal ladder and the entrance to a war tunnel (about 1 hour total from the start). The approach is rhythmic and progressive, physically preparing you for the activity ahead.
Via Ferrata
Once you've put on your harness in the comfortable flat area near the ladder, begin the climb, noting the commemorative plaque. The via ferrata develops along a rocky ridge of dolomitic limestone, with a predominantly vertical trend broken by ledges and terraces. The initial metal ladder is slightly overhanging, then becomes more slabby. After climbing it, the cable guides you over a series of slabby rocks trending left, a horizontal section that allows you to get comfortable with the environment. You then arrive at the base of a gully, which you ascend staying mostly on the right side, occasionally stemming. This channel, carved into the rock, offers good exposure and a clear view of the approach trail, introducing the panoramic character of the itinerary. At the top of the gully, on a ledge, you'll find the summit logbook in a red box. Continue on a stepped ramp to the left, then tackle a pleasant series of slabs and small rock steps where the original installation anchors are clearly visible. The pace is continuous and climbing-like, with holds and footholds always abundant. A steeper section, with excellent natural holds, leads to a small notch. Cross it by descending a couple of meters on the opposite side and, following the cable to the right, you reach the base of a short equipped chimney. This is climbed without particular difficulty in its initial part, while the final steps are more pronounced and lead to a small rock face. After overcoming this, a final short stretch of easy equipped trail brings you a few meters below the summit ridge, where a simple wooden cross marks the top of Zuc della Guardia (1911 m). The climbing time from the start is about 40 minutes, for a total of about 1 hour and 45 minutes from the parking lot. The experience is technical but fluid, with increasing exposure culminating in the expansive panorama from the summit.
Descent
From the summit, the Passo del Cason di Lanza is clearly visible below. The descent follows the normal route that goes down towards the north, along the opposite side from the ascent. The path, while generally more slabby and trail-like, has some exposed sections protected by steel cables, where caution is necessary. Be careful of the ground, which is gravelly and unstable in places, especially in damp conditions. Once the protected sections end, follow some yellow paint marks across a debris slope until you rejoin the junction you ignored during the ascent. From here, via the familiar trail, descend to the pass and return to the parking lot in about 1 hour from the summit, for a total hike time of about 2 hours and 45 minutes. The descent offers a change of perspective and a more relaxed pace, but still requires concentration due to the nature of the terrain.
Useful Notes
The Ferrata degli Alpini allo Zuc della Guardia is a medium-difficulty itinerary, very climbable and pleasant, characterized by excellent continuity in progression. During the descent, caution is necessary, as the ground can be treacherous, especially in damp conditions. This via ferrata lends itself well to being combined with other protected routes in Carnia, such as the nearby Ferrata Amici della Montagna allo Zermula, the Ferrata Uiberlachersteig, or the Ferrata Crete Rosse alla Creta di Aip, clearly visible from the summit. Other interesting options in the vicinity include the Ferrata Contin and the Ferrata alla Torre di Clampil towards Passo Pramollo, or the Sentiero Attrezzato Cuestalta to the east. Its compact nature and short commitment make it an ideal introduction to protected climbing in the Carnic alpine environment.
