Ferrata Galera

Overview

The Ferrata della Galera is an alpine route that leads to the summit of Monte Galera (969 m) in the northwestern sector of the Island of Elba. While the route does not present high-level climbing difficulties, it demands considerable physical effort due to the total elevation gain and the length of the excursion, rewarded by exceptional views over the Tyrrhenian Sea and the archipelago.

Approach

The starting point is Marciana. To reach the access to the via ferrata, you must climb to the top station of the Monte Capanne cable car. The ascent can be done on foot following the CAI trails 1 and 6, or, in summer, by using the lift. From the top station, continue along the trail toward the antennas, staying slightly below the ridgeline with a modest descent on the northwest side (follow trail 00, marked with white-red blazes). Skirting Monte Galera on the right, you finally reach the start of an equipped gully. The full approach from Marciana takes about 3 hours; from the top station of the cable car, the walking time is approximately 45 minutes. The environment is typically Mediterranean-mountain, with a trail winding through granite outcrops and tall scrub, offering the first views of the rocky coastline.

Via Ferrata

The equipped route to the summit is divided into three distinct sections, each with its own morphological and technical character. The first segment consists of a horizontal traverse across a compact granite slab, moderately exposed but without any significant technical passages; progression is continuous, and the cable primarily serves as protection against the exposure. The second section briefly descends along a ridge, introducing an up-and-down that breaks the monotony of the ascent. The third and final sector, the most distinctive, climbs a succession of gently sloping granite slabs, requiring more active progression and finally leading to the summit of Monte Galera, bare of any man-made structures. The total time from the start of the excursion is about 3 hours and 30 minutes. The route unfolds mainly along ledges and rocky ridges, offering a varied rhythm that alternates airy sections with short stretches of walking.

Descent

Two main options are available for the return. The first involves retracing the entire ascent route in reverse, for a total time of about 6 hours and 30 minutes. Alternatively, from the summit of Monte Galera, you can continue along the CAI trail 00 toward La Tavola, then take the CAI 10 trail, which descends to the junction with the CAI 3 trail, just below Marciana. This longer and more varied descent option brings the total excursion time to about 7 hours. The choice affects the rhythm of the day: retracing your steps is more direct, while the alternative allows for a more complete exploration of the southern side of the massif.

Useful Notes

The equipped route on Monte Galera is best considered technical hiking on rock rather than a true via ferrata, although some passages go beyond the function of a simple handrail. The main value of the excursion lies in the spectacular and wild environment that distinguishes it, a unique synthesis of granite rock, sea, and unspoiled nature typical of the wildest part of the Island of Elba. For navigation, the use of detailed maps is recommended. While the island does not have other via ferratas, it offers a dense network of trails, making it an ideal destination for the shoulder seasons for those wishing to explore its fascinating mountainous interior. The character of the route is primarily scenic and continuous, with physical effort prevailing over technical difficulty.
