Overview

The Ferrata Franco Garda, culminating at the Rifugio Monzino, is a deeply rewarding alpine experience in the Mont Blanc massif. Though classified as moderate in technical difficulty, the route delivers intense emotions thanks to its progression of protected passages that unfold beneath some of the most iconic alpine peaks. The refuge, clinging to the rock in a spectacular position, is a destination of extraordinary scenic value.

Approach

Access begins from the Freney farmsteads in Val Veny (Courmayeur, AO), where you park along the road. Take the service road, crossing two bridges that span first the Dora di Veny and then the Miage stream. Turn left onto trail number 16, signed for Rifugio Monzino. The well-marked path, with yellow waymarks, enters the woods, crosses the Freney stream via a bridge, and climbs through a boulder field. At a clear junction, keep right (the left leads to Lago delle Marmotte and the Ferrata Glarey). Shortly after, you reach a rocky band where the Ferrata Franco Garda begins. The approach from the parking area takes about 45 minutes of walking.

Via Ferrata

The start features a diagonal, steeply angled wall, made easier by the presence of metal stirrups. This introductory section, of a preparatory nature, leads to a ledge that bends right before resuming the vertical climb. Here you face a wall of about seventy meters, densely equipped with stirrups, offering two options: it is recommended to follow the right-hand route for the ascent, reserving the left-hand one (the original) for the descent.

The fixed gear temporarily ends, giving way to a well-defined trail that leads to the next sector. This overcomes a vertical wall of about thirty meters, bringing you to a small terrace. Resuming the trail, you ascend a grassy rib with a few switchbacks; then, veering right, you reach the start of the third protected section. You overcome a few vertical steps and proceed by skirting a rib on its left side. The pace becomes more continuous and physical as you tackle the final wall, about a hundred meters long, after which the Rifugio Monzino comes into view. A final stretch of rocky trail leads to the last meters of cable, which climb a chimney and a couple of gently sloping slabs of modest difficulty. A few final steps bring you to the Rifugio Monzino, perched at the base of Mont Blanc. The via ferrata takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes from the start, for a total of about 2 hours from the parking area.

Ferrata Aiguille de Chatelet Near the refuge, in the direction of Val Veny, a prominent ridge rises directly toward the Chatelet. Following a faint path through the meadows toward some cairns, you reach the start of this short ferrata. The route begins on the left side of the ridge with a horizontal section, then climbs a sloping ramp equipped with numerous stirrups. Gaining height and exposure quickly, you arrive at the thin summit ridge, shaped in very jagged rock rich in natural holds. After a few minutes, the cable ends and you traverse a short but exposed connecting section. The ferrata resumes with similar difficulty, interspersed with another trail section, all the way to the summit (about 15 minutes from the start). The descent follows the same route. This variant is not included in the times for the main itinerary.

Descent

The descent follows the same trail as the approach. In one section, you can use the old variant to avoid possible waiting times on the long vertical wall. The descent from Rifugio Monzino takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, for a total hike time of about 4 hours and 30 minutes.

Useful Notes

The Ferrata Garda has been recently renovated and the equipment is in excellent condition. Although it features exposed sections, the technical difficulties remain moderate, making the route accessible to hikers with good physical fitness and minimal familiarity with the high-mountain environment. A stop at the Rifugio Monzino is recommended for its exceptional panorama. For experienced climbers, there is the possibility of a two-day itinerary that, from the Rifugio Monzino, reaches the Bivacco Borelli (home to another via ferrata) via the Col Chasseur. Given the overall length and elevation gain, it is difficult to combine this ferrata with others on the same day. In the area, however, you will find other interesting options such as the Sentiero Attrezzato Gatti at Mont la Brenva, the more challenging Ferrata al Bivacco Borelli, the Sentiero Attrezzato al Bivacco Boccalatte, and the Ferrata del Bicentenario at Mont Chetif.
