Overview

The Ferrata Josè Angster, located in Gressoney-Saint-Jean in the Aosta Valley, is a route of moderate commitment and great satisfaction. The line climbs roughly 250 meters of elevation gain up a compact granite wall, offering an athletic and continuous progression. Its defining technical feature is the wide spacing between the fixed metal rungs, which demands a long, confident stride and presents an added challenge for hikers of shorter stature. The route, which includes a brief, slightly overhanging section, unfolds in an open, panoramic setting with constant, majestic views of the Monte Rosa massif. The ideal season for the climb runs from the first ten days of June through the end of October.

Approach

The starting point is the town of Gressoney-Saint-Jean. Once in town, locate a small bridge on the left that crosses the Lys stream; after crossing, continue straight for about 200 meters along a small road to a parking area. From here, take the trail on the right, heading toward Lago di Gover. After passing a wooden building, follow the western shore of the lake, hugging the mountainside, then enter the woods following trail 4A (red markers). At a junction, leave trail 4A and turn right onto trail 15 heading north. After about a hundred meters, you reach a rocky slope with a signpost for the via ferrata; here, leave trail 15, which continues on level ground, and climb up the rocky slope following yellow markers. Near the cliffs and a small wooden hut, turn right for a final stretch until you reach the start, marked as F1 with a cable protected by a yellow sheath (in contrast to the nearby Ferrata dei Bambini, F2, with a green sheath). The approach time from the parking area is about 30 minutes. The approach passes through a wooded, humid environment with the background sound of the stream, before emerging onto the rocky slopes at the base of the wall.

Via Ferrata

The equipped route begins without preamble with a vertical wall fitted with widely spaced rungs, immediately setting the pace of progression that defines the climb. The rock is solid granite, with few useful natural holds. After overcoming this first section, you tackle a few rocky steps and a short horizontal traverse that leads to a ledge. Here, you cross the cable of the Ferrata dei Bambini (F2) coming from the left; the Josè Angster instead continues with a vertical line that gradually trends to the right, heading toward some obvious rock roofs visible higher up. The climb, always assisted by cable and rungs, unfolds on a continuous, well-exposed slab, offering an exceptional panorama of Monte Rosa that progressively opens up. After passing a corner, you encounter the crux of the route: a slightly overhanging section that demands concentrated physical effort in the arms, again with widely spaced rungs. Just beyond, there is a statue of the Madonna housed in a glass niche. You then continue vertically toward the roofs, reaching the last beautiful wall, exposed and climbable. Midway up this wall, you cross a short metal catwalk, after which you continue on passages of moderate difficulty until the rock becomes steeper, signaling the end of the equipped route. The finish is marked by a flag. The climbing time for the via ferrata is about 1 hour and 30 minutes, for a total of 2 hours from the start of the hike. The route is characterized by a sustained pace and constant exposure, with few natural resting points, making it more physical than technical.

Descent

From the flag at the end of the ferrata, on the left, you'll notice a half-ruined hut with a plaque indicating the elevation of 1750 meters. Just to the left of the hut, a boulder bears descent directions. Take trail 4A, which, with a series of switchbacks through the woods, descends steeply but easily until it rejoins the trail coming from the end of the Ferrata dei Bambini (F2). Continue descending until you find the route taken on the approach, and from there return to the parking area. The descent takes about 30 minutes, bringing the total hike time to 2 hours and 30 minutes. The return trail is shaded and steep, offering a sharp contrast to the open, sunny environment of the ferrata.

Useful Notes

It is essential to pay close attention during the approach: the signs and yellow markers actually indicate the way to reach the end of the ferrata, not the start. If during the climb you encounter the ruined hut with the "1750 m" plaque, it means you have mistakenly reached the top of the route and taken the wrong path. The main characteristic of the Ferrata Josè Angster is the notable spacing between the metal rungs, which makes progression more physical and technically demanding for people of short stature. In some cases, to overcome sections with very distant rungs, it can be more effective and efficient to climb directly on the natural rock, using hands and feet, while always staying clipped into the safety cable. The route is essentially a long, enjoyable assisted climb, whose appeal lies in the continuity of the vertical and the quality of the environment. This via ferrata shares part of the access and descent trail with the easier Ferrata dei Bambini, allowing you to combine the two routes into a very full half-day. For those wishing to extend their activity in the area, other options exist such as the Ferrata Covarey or the Ferrata del Gorbeillon, while for experienced and fit climbers, the nearby and very challenging Ferrata delle Guide di Gressoney is available.

Ferrata corta ma non banale per la distanza delle staffe e qualche passaggio più atletico. Ferrata in ottime condizioni.
