Ferrata di Covarey

Overview

The Covarey Via Ferrata, located in the Aosta Valley, is a moderately short and undemanding route, suitable for a half-day outing. Classified as easy, it nonetheless includes a sequence of technical passages-an overhang and two suspension ladders-that locally raise the difficulty, requiring some familiarity with exposure. It makes an excellent choice for a beginner who has already gained a basic level of confidence in the mountain environment.

Approach

The starting point is the hamlet of Covarey. From here, follow the road toward the Chevrere Mont Avic Wildlife Park, which has a large parking area. Continue on foot toward the Covarey Park Visitor Center, recognizable by the information board dedicated to the via ferrata; the climbing wall is already visible behind it. Take a dirt track, keeping right at the first junction. After crossing a small bridge over a stream, the path narrows, and you follow faint yellow trail markers. The final stretch, steep and uneven, leads in about 30 minutes from the parking lot to the start of the via ferrata.

The approach unfolds on the wooded side of the valley, characterized by a scree slope at the base of a compact rock wall of micaschist. The trail, initially comfortable, gradually takes on a more alpine character, preparing the visitor for the vertical environment ahead.

Via Ferrata

The equipped route begins with a short horizontal traverse, aided by a wooden walkway that provides secure footing. This leads to the first ladder, extending about 40 rungs. Its distinctive construction feature is the use of round wooden rungs threaded directly onto the carrying cables, a solution that gives the structure considerable mobility. After climbing it, you tackle a horizontal section that ends on a small overhanging ledge, passable thanks to a sturdy steel cable. Continue up a pleasant vertical slab, very climbable, which leads to the second ladder. This one is similar to the first but shorter. Once past it, you reach the rocky pinnacle that marks the end of the Covarey Via Ferrata in just a few steps. The time for the equipped section alone is about 45 minutes, for a total of 1 hour and 15 minutes from the start of the hike.

The via ferrata unfolds on an articulated wall, alternating horizontal sections on ledges, short vertical slab sections, and airy passages at the suspension ladders. The pace is uneven, with technical sequences interspersed with brief stops on ledges. The exposure is constant and noticeable, especially in the central section, though the overall brevity limits the physical effort. The character of the route is predominantly technical and scenic, offering a good introduction to the dynamics of progression on fixed ropes.

Descent

From the top of the via ferrata, climb a short stretch over a rocky area until you intercept a trail in the woods. It is important to pay attention, as markings are almost nonexistent. Turn right onto this trail, which descends steeply through the forest until it emerges at the square of the hamlet La Ville. From here, following the paved road downhill, you return in about 20 minutes to the starting parking lot at the Wildlife Park.

The descent takes place in a completely different environment, immersed in the dense conifer forest of the slope. The morphology changes radically: you leave the exposed rock for a steep, sometimes slippery path on forest terrain. This phase requires a mental transition, shifting from the technical focus of the ascent to the concentration needed to follow a faint trail.

Useful Notes

This itinerary consists of three distinct equipped sections separated by short walks. The difficulties, though limited, are concentrated in the central section, between the first ladder and the overhanging ledge. The descent through the woods, due to the lack of signage, is the phase that requires the most attention in finding the route. Given its brevity and modest demands, the Covarey Via Ferrata lends itself well to being combined, on the same day, with other via ferratas in the area, such as the more challenging Gorbeillon Via Ferrata toward Cervinia, or the Casimiro or Josè Angster via ferratas. For navigation, detailed maps of the Monte Rosa Valleys or Mont Avic are recommended.

The overall experience is that of an introductory but not trivial route, where technique prevails over physical effort. Its "packet" structure of difficulties allows you to experience various typical via ferrata situations (suspension ladders, traverses, slabs) in a short, controlled context, making it a useful testing ground before tackling more continuous and demanding itineraries.
