Sentiero Attrezzato al Rifugio Dalmazzi

Overview

This route is currently dismantled and impassable. The equipped path to Rifugio Dalmazzi is a severe and intensely thrilling alpine itinerary, set in a high-altitude environment. The route unfolds toward the basin of the Ghiacciaio del Triolet, alternating between moraine zones, ridges, and gullies, with some sections equipped with fixed ropes to aid progression, especially useful during the descent.

The itinerary begins in the hamlet of Arnouva, the last settlement in the Val Ferret in the municipality of Courmayeur in the Aosta Valley. You reach the village by driving the entire length of the valley on a rather narrow paved road. Parking is available in the square in front of a restaurant and a campsite.

Approach

From the parking area, take the dirt road following signs for Rifugio Elena (trail markers 23, then 32). After about one kilometer, at a right-hand curve, you encounter a junction. Here the equipped path to Rifugio Dalmazzi begins, branching off to the left. Continuing on the trail and ignoring the signs for Bivacco Comine (trail 22), you ascend the valley floor. You cross four streams, tributaries of the Dora di Ferret, until you reach the moraine of the Ghiacciaio del Triolet. The climb continues following yellow paint marks through a boulder field and along the north side of the valley. A short descending section leads into the glacial valley, then the ascent resumes until you gain the ridge. This ridge is followed to the rocks below the refuge. After crossing a snowfield, you arrive near the final sector of the hike, characterized by the equipped path with fixed ropes. The approach takes about 2 hours from the parking area.

The environment is typically glacial and morainic, with a route that alternates between flat sections and sustained climbs over unstable scree. Progression is mainly along one side of the valley, offering a continuous view of the Triolet basin. The pace is uneven, with frequent changes in gradient that require a steady and careful step, especially when crossing the streams and the terminal moraine. Exposure gradually increases as you approach the ridge, where the trail becomes more airy.

Via Ferrata

Ascending the final gully, you encounter large boulders on which there are sections of fixed rope anchored to the rock with bolts and pitons. Progression in the gully proceeds to the left. You overcome an exposed edge and then tackle a dihedral, which is climbed using ropes and metal stirrups. Once on the meadows and rock slabs above, you make a traverse to the right. The via ferrata ends a short distance from Rifugio Dalmazzi. This equipped section takes about 30 minutes, bringing the total time from the start to approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The gully is carved into solid rock, often granitic or dioritic in nature, with passages that exploit natural ledges and chimneys. The character of this sector is distinctly vertical and technical, though brief. Progression is sequential and continuous, with no natural rests, requiring good management of arm strength for the climbing sections. Exposure is pronounced, especially at the edge and in the dihedral, but the route remains well-protected by fixed anchors. Arriving on the meadows marks a sudden change in environment, from the severe aspect of the gully to a more open and panoramic landscape.

Descent

The return is via the same route as the ascent, where the equipped sections are of great assistance. You therefore retrace the equipped path, the ridge, the moraine, and descend to the valley back to the parking area. The descent from the refuge takes about 2 hours, for a total of 5 hours for the entire hike.

The descent repeats the same variety of terrain in reverse order. The roped sections greatly facilitate downward progression, but still require attention due to wear on the fixed ropes and the possible presence of residual ice. The return along the ridge and moraine is physically demanding on the joints, with a pace that must remain controlled on the loose debris. The environment, if possible, appears even more magnificent from the descending perspective, with the glacier dominating the scene.

Useful Notes

From a technical standpoint, the Sentiero Attrezzato del Rifugio Dalmazzi does not present extreme difficulties, though it includes vertical passages. However, it is essential to consider that the itinerary is set in a high mountain context, dominated by imposing peaks and in proximity to a vast glacier, elements that increase its overall commitment and must absolutely not be underestimated. Constant attention must be paid to the danger of falling rocks along the entire route leading to this daring refuge.

For the elevation gain and effort required, this hike, similar to the nearby one to Rifugio Boccalatte, generally occupies the entire day. The area of Val Ferret and Courmayeur nonetheless offers a rich selection of other routes, including equipped ones.

The itinerary as a whole combines a long hiking approach with a short but intense alpine section. Its character is predominantly scenic and a traverse of the environment, rather than purely technical. The constant exposure to the glacial context and the harsh morphology of the valley define a physically continuous and mentally demanding experience, where assessing conditions (snow, ice, rock stability) is an integral part of the difficulty.
