Ferrata Castiglioni

Overview

The Ferrata Castiglioni is a demanding high-altitude route marked by pronounced exposure and sweeping panoramas. The trail connects Rifugio Agostini to Rifugio XII Apostoli in the heart of the Dolomiti di Brenta. It is ideally suited to being incorporated into a multi-day trek, offering exceptional views over the southern sector of the group. The high elevation demands particular attention to the possible presence of residual snow-a factor to assess even in the height of summer.

Approach

The usual starting point is Pinzolo. Along the SS239, on the right you'll find the cable car station for Doss del Sabion; a large parking area on the left allows you to leave your car. From here, proceed using the lifts.

The traditional access to the via ferrata involves reaching Rifugio Agostini. This description follows the ascent route starting from this bivouac. To get there from Pinzolo, use the same approach as the Sentiero Attrezzato della Scala Santa, which from the top cable car station leads in about 3 hours to Rifugio XII Apostoli (2489 m). From here, to reach the start of the via ferrata at Rifugio Agostini, take the Sentiero Attrezzato dell'Ideale (about 2 hours and 30 minutes). A variant avoids the final 100-meter descent to the refuge: shortly before, taking the CAI trail 321 to the right, you reach the beginning of the equipped route directly.

Via Ferrata

From the area of Rifugio Agostini (2410 m), follow the well-marked CAI trail 321, which climbs the slope at the foot of the imposing walls of Cima d'Agola. In about 30 minutes you reach the metal plaque marking the official start of the equipped route.

The first section runs along an easy ledge to the right of the plaque. Immediately after, you tackle two consecutive sections of metal rungs to overcome some rocky steps. The route continues on a wide ledge, then meets a new series of three fixed ladders. Once past these, you traverse a narrower ledge that leads to a small terrace, useful for any crossings. Resuming the path, after a final ladder you shift slightly to the right to tackle two more ladders: the first features a couple of particularly vertical meters, while the second is more slanted. The gully now narrows, approaching the exit. The last two ladders finally bring you to Bocca dei Due Denti (2859 m), a spectacular pass reachable in about 1 hour and 15 minutes from the start, which rewards you with a magnificent view of the Presanella.

The route unfolds entirely on the northwestern face of Cima d'Agola, a compact dolomitic bastion. The progression is continuous and predominantly vertical, punctuated by a succession of metal ladders that directly overcome the rock steps. The environment is severe and the exposure is constant, although the massive presence of the rungs keeps the technical difficulty contained. The pace is steady and physical, with few natural breaks.

From the pass, the descent continues along the valley, often crossing a snowfield and overcoming some easy equipped sections on rocky terrain. You also tackle a couple of short free-climbing descents of first grade, simple with dry rock. The trail then descends until it reaches Rifugio XII Apostoli. The total time for the via ferrata section and descent is about 2 hours and 30 minutes from Rifugio Agostini.

The descent from the pass leaves the verticality of the wall for a more open, glacial environment. The pace changes radically: you alternate between easy climbing, passages on rocky terrain, and crossing snowfields, with a less continuous and more varied rhythm. The exposure decreases, but the character remains alpine and requires attention to the condition of the snow.

Descent

From Rifugio XII Apostoli, return to Pinzolo by retracing the Sentiero Attrezzato della Scala Santa (about 2 hours). Given the total length of the loop (about 9 hours), it is often advisable to stay overnight in one of the refuges, also taking into account the operating hours of the lifts for the return.

Useful Notes

The Ferrata Castiglioni is a very exposed route that climbs an imposing rocky bastion, but the technical difficulties are moderate thanks to the abundant presence of metal ladders. This can make it, in some respects, a bit repetitive. However, the high-altitude environment is extraordinary and the panorama from Bocca dei Due Denti amply repays the effort.

The main critical element is the possible presence of snow and ice, especially in the descent section from the pass and along the Sentiero Attrezzato dell'Ideale, where you cross perennial snowfields. It is prudent to contact the refuges for updated information and to carry glacier equipment (crampons and ice axe) when necessary.

The Dolomiti di Brenta offer a network of magnificent routes. The via ferrata lends itself to being combined with the Sentiero Attrezzato della Scala Santa and the Sentiero Attrezzato dell'Ideale. For multi-day itineraries, from Rifugio Agostini you can continue towards Rifugio Pedrotti via the Ferrata Brentari or the easier Sentiero Attrezzato Apolloni, opening up the possibility of numerous other classic via ferratas in the group.
