Ferrata dell'Amicizia a Cima Sat

Overview

The Ferrata dell'Amicizia is a demanding alpine route that stretches from the northwestern shore of Lake Garda to the distinctive summit of Cima Sat. The route is defined by long metal ladders that overcome the most vertical and airy sections of the limestone wall, giving the climb an intense and spectacular rhythm. This is a physically very taxing hike, given its considerable length and overall elevation gain, requiring solid athletic conditioning. The ideal season to tackle it is spring and autumn, as summer heat can become oppressive along the steep, south-facing slopes, making it inadvisable to attempt then.

Approach

The starting point is Riva del Garda, in the province of Trento. From here, take the Gardesana Occidentale road toward Limone and look for the Monte Oro pay parking lot. Nearby, a CAI sign marks the start of the trail. After parking, head toward the signpost. From here begins trail CAI 404, which climbs through a series of switchbacks in the woods to a junction. Keep left, proceeding toward a small Venetian fortress. Just before reaching it, trail 404 resumes on the right and soon leads onto a forest road. Follow this road to the left, then turn right at the next junction, climbing until you reach the Capanna Santa Barbara at 560 meters elevation. Continuing south, you'll find the turnoff for trail CAI 404B on the left, which leads to the start of the via ferrata in just a few minutes. The approach time from the parking lot is about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Via Ferrata

Just below the starting plaque, the steel cable begins. The first section runs diagonally to the left across a sloping slab, then tackles an easy, stepped wall. You emerge onto a rocky path, already offering a broad view of Cima Sat. The climb proceeds at a discontinuous pace, alternating rocky ledges, low-angle wall sections, and short trail segments between one equipped section and the next. The progression zigzags, overcoming ledges and vertical slabs with the help of stirrups, in an environment of light, compact rock. You then reach the first distinctive feature: a long metal ladder over 40 meters that overcomes an exposed, smooth wall. After climbing it, you traverse a short horizontal section on a bar and ascend a second ladder. Following a panoramic terrace, you tackle a vertical slab using a few stirrups, then enter the third ladder, which climbs a well-defined dihedral.

A traverse to the right and a short equipped step lead to the fourth and most impressive ladder, about 70 meters long. This passage, ascending a smooth wall, is decidedly airy and exposed, offering a pronounced sense of emptiness. Once past this, you reach a small ledge and enter a narrow ledge to the left. You arrive at a chimney: the lower part is climbed with agile scrambling, while the upper section, more challenging, requires a diagonal ascent to the left using stirrups. Exiting the chimney, you go around a boulder on a ledge and tackle a short exposed descent. After a final series of metal ladders and a last rocky step, you conquer the summit with its distinctive flag at 1260 meters elevation. The climbing time for the via ferrata is about 1 hour and 45 minutes, for a total of 3 hours from the start of the hike.

Descent

From the summit of Cima Sat, descend westward, overcoming a short equipped section to a helicopter landing pad. At the next junction, you have two options: The first, to the right (north), follows trail CAI 418, which descends with numerous switchbacks to a forest road (CAI 402). Keeping right, follow the forest road along the 402 until it rejoins, just above Riva del Garda, the approach trail, which you retrace back to the parking lot. This variant takes about 2 hours from the summit (5 hours total). The second option, to the left (south), involves a short climb to a junction where you keep left on CAI 404. Continue on this trail, at times equipped, ignoring the turnoff for Bochet dei Concoli. At the next junction, leave the 404A (which continues right toward Cima Capi) and descend left along CAI 404. The trail proceeds at mid-height, including a long ladder, until reaching the Church of Santa Barbara. Just beyond, you find the junction from the approach to the via ferrata, from which you descend back along the ascent route. This descent takes about 3 hours from the summit (6 hours total).

Useful Notes

The Ferrata dell'Amicizia is a very airy and exposed route, an aspect to keep firmly in mind for psychological assessment. Technically, it presents no major difficulties, except for the chimney before the summit, which can be considered of medium difficulty due to the need for active progression. At the time of this description, the metal ladders showed some mobility, though they are safe, conveying a feeling of instability that heightens the exposure. Good physical conditioning is essential to sustain the elevation gain, the length of the route, and the intensity of the vertical progression. Beyond the summer heat, it's worth noting that the route was built in 1972 by the G.R.A.M. (Gruppo Rocciatori di Riva del Garda) to celebrate the centenary of the SAT. It is one of the most popular via ferratas in the Alps, combining a spectacular setting with a demanding, continuous climb.
