Ferrata Signora delle Acque

Overview

The Ferrata Signora delle Acque, inaugurated in 2019 near Ballino (Fiavè, Valli Giudicarie, province of Trento), unfolds within a rocky amphitheater sculpted by water, offering a spectacular setting dominated by the Cascata del Rio Ruzza. The route is divided into two sections with distinct characters: an initial, more accessible part, ideal for families and beginners, and a subsequent, more technical and vertical section, which requires familiarity with exposure and rock progression. In this stretch, the cable is sometimes positioned laterally, forcing climbers to make use of natural holds on the wall and to carefully manage the pervasive humidity generated by the nearby waterfall. The itinerary includes crossing two suspension bridges, elements that add variety and a moderate dose of adrenaline to the experience, balancing moments of aerial suspension with more traditional climbing.

Approach

The route begins from the village of Ballino, in the Valli Giudicarie, a short distance from Lake Garda. From the village square, take via Ballino, immediately keeping left until you reach a large parking area. From there, continue on foot along the paved road heading west/southwest, which coincides with the CAI trail 420 leading to the waterfalls. At the end of the pavement, a signed junction requires turning right toward the north, staying on trail 420. The easy, well-marked path quickly leads to the banks of the Rio Ruzza, where clear signage indicates the start of the Ferrata Signora delle Acque at the Cascata del Rio Ruzza. The approach from the parking area takes about 30 minutes of walking on varied terrain, through a forested environment that gradually reveals the rocky morphology of the gorge.

Via Ferrata

The start of the ferrata immediately presents a first vertical wall, equipped in a modern and safe manner thanks to numerous recently installed metal rungs. After overcoming this short but decisive vertical introduction, you tackle a traverse to the left on a double steel cable fitted with foot pegs-a horizontal passage that allows you to settle into a rhythm. Resuming the vertical cable for a few meters, you reach the first suspension bridge, a structure with two foot cables equipped with treads and two hand cables, enabling you to cross a gap in the stream between two ledges of the waterfall. The progression then continues beneath an imposing rocky amphitheater, constantly wet from the spray of the main waterfall, concluding the first section-easy and distinctly scenic-in about 15 minutes from the start.

This marks the beginning of the second and more demanding section of the Ferrata Signora delle Acque, where the character of the route changes radically, becoming more continuous, vertical, and exposed. The safety cable is often positioned laterally to the right, a choice that forces you to carefully seek natural holds in the compact but well-fractured limestone rock, and to adopt a more deliberate movement technique. Passages with slight overhangs and airy stretches develop along ledges and slabs, with a sustained pace and few rests. After a vertical wall equipped first with rungs and then with a ladder, you arrive at the second Tibetan bridge, an adrenaline-pumping element that forms a right angle directly above a water drop of the waterfall, amplifying the sensation of suspension. Once across the bridge, the climb resumes over rocky terrain and a new wall with passages that are first diagonal and then vertical, reaching another short suspension bridge. A final vertical wall, almost devoid of artificial aids, invites a brief but intense climb before emerging onto a dirt surface. The ferrata ends here, after about 45 minutes of technical progression (for a total of 1 hour and 15 minutes from the start).

Descent

From the end of the equipment, continue to the right, taking a trail that descends with several switchbacks to the base of the Cascata del Rio Ruzza. From this point, return via the ascent route, retracing the CAI trail 420 back to the parking area in Ballino. The descent, on a well-defined path, takes about 30 minutes, bringing the total time for the excursion to approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Useful Notes

The environment of the Ferrata Signora delle Acque is of remarkable scenic impact, with the waterfall dominating the entire gorge and creating a cool, humid microclimate. The equipment is new and in excellent condition. Special attention must be paid to the second suspension bridge: the safety cable is positioned rather high relative to the foot treads. For people of shorter stature, an extension for the via ferrata lanyard can be useful, or alternatively, clipping directly to the side cables of the bridge. Thanks to the quick approach and spectacular scenery, this ferrata is very popular, and its actual difficulties, especially in the second part, are sometimes underestimated. While not an extreme itinerary, it is decidedly exposed, and some sections require basic climbing technique and good arm strength, in a context where humidity can make the rock slippery. It is advisable to tackle it with at least some prior experience in via ferratas and in excellent physical condition. The area of the Valli Giudicarie and Alto Garda offers numerous alternatives for hikers and via ferrata enthusiasts, from easy routes to medium-difficulty climbs, allowing you to plan an entire vacation centered on equipped mountain routes.
