Description
Overview
The Sentiero Attrezzato al Corno Trentapassi is a deeply rewarding route that culminates on the panoramic summit at 1248 meters, offering exceptional views over the Lake Iseo basin. While it does not feature extreme climbing passages, the route is still challenging due to its length and numerous exposed sections, requiring excellent physical condition and familiarity with the alpine environment. The classification as a via ferrata is only partial, as you also tackle short but decisive vertical rock climbing sections. The route is strongly discouraged after heavy rain, due to the many grassy and slippery unprotected sections.
Approach
The starting point is the hamlet of Tolino, located on the eastern shore of Lake Iseo. Reach Tolino from the road connecting Brescia to Valcamonica, then take a ramp into the village. After about 50 meters, on the left, you'll find a playground with a small parking area-the recommended place to leave your car. An alternative, which saves a few minutes of walking, is to continue along Via Canale to a small bridge, where a clearing can accommodate a couple of vehicles. From the main parking area, follow Via Costa and turn right onto Via Canale, reaching the small bridge. Here, a signpost indicates the CAI trails: take trail 212 for Corno Trentapassi. The well-marked path heads west, initially entering a coppice forest before tackling a steep ascent over open, rocky slopes where exposure begins to become noticeable. The terrain is characterized by a succession of short wooded sections and steep, debris-filled gullies. After a wooded stretch and a strenuous climb, you reach a hut, from which you can see the target ridge. Shortly beyond, near a large chestnut tree and a flat stone, you encounter an unmarked fork: ignore the left track, which is very exposed, and proceed decisively to the right, ascending the wooded ridge. The pace of the approach is sustained and continuous, with constant elevation gain. After overcoming some rocky steps where it is already advisable to put on your via ferrata gear, you finally arrive at the yellow sign marking the start of the via ferrata. The approach time is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Via Ferrata
Just before the sign, a chain helps you overcome a crack in the rock. Immediately after, a metal ladder allows you to ascend a short chimney, rich in natural holds. Past this first step, climb a ramp to the left and continue diagonally, tackling some rocky outcrops. The exposure becomes pronounced. The route mainly develops over slabs and fissures of compact limestone, alternating vertical sections with short ledges. After rounding a corner, follow a grassy path and, using the cable as simple support, cross a small spur by walking along a sharp ridge section. After another corner and a narrow saddle, continue on the right side of the ridge. You then reach the most significant vertical wall, about fifteen meters high, which is ascended thanks to numerous holds and metal steps. This passage is the technical heart of the route, purely vertical. Exiting the wall, a short path leads to a traverse to the left, followed by crossing an exposed spur. This introduces the most adrenaline-pumping section of the entire route, where exposure is total. After rounding a boulder in a highly exposed position, you enter a narrow ledge. The path then continues over unprotected rock until reaching the North Anticima, overcoming a final, exposed oblique ledge and a smooth, sloping slab, beyond which you find a cross. The progression in this final section is discontinuous, made up of short rises and balancing steps on bare rock. The equipped section ends here, after about 1 hour from the start (2h 45' total).
To reach the true summit of Corno Trentapassi, descend a few meters on the right side of the ridge to a saddle, from where you resume climbing. Upon reaching a fork, you can either continue straight over easy Class 1 rock or take the left track that joins the easier CAI trail 205. Both options lead to the summit, which offers a breathtaking panorama over Lake Iseo. This final, more relaxing and scenic section takes about 30 minutes (3h 15' total).
Descent
From the summit, descend following trail 205/265 heading east. After a moderately sloping section along the ridge, at a first fork keep left (CAI 205), tackling a descent that is steeper in places through the woods. Ignore a deviation to the right for trail 229 and, at the next fork, keep left again to take CAI 206. The pace becomes steady on a well-trodden path. Following this trail, you eventually cross a dirt road. At this point, you can choose to descend along the road to the small bridge from the approach, or walk it slightly uphill to where CAI 206 turns left, descending more pleasantly through the woods back to Tolino and the parking area. The descent takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, for a total of 4 hours and 45 minutes from the start.
Useful Notes
The approach is steep and exposed in several places; the use of trekking poles is recommended, along with maximum caution on wet ground. At the fork near the hut and the large chestnut tree, it is essential to turn right as described, to avoid a very exposed and difficult path. The route has no water sources, so you must bring an ample supply of water, especially in hot weather. The entire route requires good training and should not be underestimated in its physical and psychological demands.
