Ferrata Ferrari al Monte Roncalla

Overview

The Ferrata Adolfo Ferrari, opened in 2004, follows a varied ridge over rocky steps and pinnacles to the summit of Monte Roncalla (1683 m). Designed to be enjoyable and suitable for climbing on natural holds, it appeals both to newcomers to via ferratas and to experienced walkers who prefer to use the rock for movement and the cable mainly for protection.

Approach

Access is possible from either the Ligurian or Piacenza side; this description follows the Ligurian approach. From Santo Stefano d'Aveto, continue up the steep road to Rocca d'Aveto and park near the chairlift square. Take a paved road on the left.

The tarmac soon ends. Pass a gate and continue towards Valle Tribolata. The path skirts the cliffs of Groppo Rosso until reaching yellow triangular waymarks. The track becomes less distinct and requires attention, but leads to the first rocky steps, climbed without fixed aids just before the start of the ferrata. Allow about 1 h 15 min from the parking area.

Via Ferrata

The ferrata starts along a rocky spur, alternating easy stretches with moderately difficult sections well suited to climbing on the rock. A chimney follows, initially slightly more technical before metal aids make progress easier. Continue over rocky steps and short saddles to the foot of a slab with good holds, climbing it using cracks and natural holds.

Near the final rock pinnacle there are two options: bypass it on a protected path or climb an exposed corner directly, the most demanding passage on the itinerary. Beyond this final step, easy ground leads across meadows to the summit of Monte Roncalla, about 40 minutes from the start of the ferrata.

Descent

There are two return options from the summit. The quickest descends towards Groppo Rosso, continues via Prato della Cipolla and reaches Rocca d'Aveto about 1 h 15 min after the end of the ferrata.

Alternatively, extend the outing along a more varied itinerary that includes the harder Ferrata Mazzocchi, passing Passo Roncalla and Groppo delle Ali before returning to Rocca d'Aveto on pistes and paths. This option takes longer but offers a full day of climbing and ridge walking.
