Ferrata Pietra Nera

Overview

The Ferrata di Pietra Nera is a mountain route that climbs a distinctive ophiolite outcrop in the hills of Parma, just a short drive from Salsomaggiore Terme. Despite its brevity, the itinerary is divided into three clearly distinct segments, each with its own technical character and feel. Its modest elevation makes it a viable option for much of the year.

Approach

The starting point is near the hamlet of Grotta. From the Salsomaggiore Terme - Fidenza exit on the A1 motorway, allow about 40 minutes of driving. From Salsomaggiore, follow the SP 359 toward Bardi, then turn right for Grotta. After passing through the village, just before the turnoff for Case di Pietra Nera, park along the road in designated pull-offs. On the opposite side of the road, marked by a barrier, you'll see the start of an unnumbered CAI trail with no specific signs for the via ferrata. The forest access, well marked with red-and-white trail blazes, skirts a few rocky outcrops and leads to the start of the fixed route in about 10 minutes of walking.

Via Ferrata

The fixed route is composed of three well-differentiated sections, offering a rhythmic and varied progression.

The first section begins with a challenging dihedral, then continues across a slab of moderate difficulty. The route proceeds with a smooth, horizontal traverse that requires smearing and leads around a corner. Beyond this, you encounter the hardest move of the section: a traverse with a low-set cable that demands agility and quick footwork. This first segment, on the compact, polished rock typical of ophiolites, takes about 15 minutes from the start (25 minutes total from the car).

The second section changes character entirely: this is no longer a classic via ferrata but a rocky path to be climbed free, with protection bolts available. The difficulties are progressive: first some easy rock steps (Grade I), then a spur (Grade II), and finally a dihedral (Grade III). This passage requires caution and solid rock-climbing skills. Progress through this segment, which breaks the continuity of the fixed line to offer a more physical and technical experience, takes about 10 minutes (35 minutes total from the car).

The third and final section returns to the feel of a via ferrata. After rounding a corner and climbing an easy diagonal ramp, you reach a rock blade with two options. The left-hand variant is easier, using a few metal rungs to ascend without particular difficulty. The right-hand variant is more demanding: you tackle the blade without artificial aids, and the cable tends to swing you outward, requiring good climbing technique. Both options rejoin after rounding a corner, leading in a few minutes to the end of the ferrata (5 minutes for this section, 40 minutes total from the car). This finale, on a sharp ridge, rewards you with sweeping views over the surrounding hills.

Descent

Once you reach the summit of Monte Pietra Nera (677 m), there are two ways down. Descending to the right, you follow a short ridge that emerges onto the provincial road; from there, keeping right, you return to the car in about 15 minutes (for a total of one hour from the start). Alternatively, descending to the left, you follow the CAI trail toward the saddle between Monte Pietra Nera and Monte Canate, then turn right onto a mule track that leads back to the car in about 15 minutes.

Useful Notes

Despite its brevity and lack of extreme difficulty, the Ferrata di Pietra Nera should not be underestimated. It features several technical passages where, to progress without relying entirely on the cable, a decent level of climbing ability is required. It also includes some unroped sections that demand free movement. Its low elevation and proximity to the motorway (about 40 minutes from the Salsomaggiore Terme exit) make it an excellent choice for a half-day outing or a stop on a longer trip.
